PHE yet to wake up, exposing people to water borne diseases | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Sept 25: DESPITE strict directions passed by the higher authorities to PHE department to brace up its activities for preventing people from water borne diseases, it is yet to wake from deep slumber, thus exposing the people to epidemic risk. It seems that the department had not learnt any lesson from the recent tragedy of gastroenteritis that engulfed the parts of erstwhile Doda district. The present situation is that there were many places in district Doda and Banihal block of district Ramban and few more areas where the concerned authorities had not taken this vexed problem seriously and ready to play with the lives of people. When contacted, MLA Doda Majid Wani said the PHE department was all responsible for this epidemic. And still they were not taking any measures to overcome the problem from and they only did chlorination and nothing else. Similarly, MLA Banihal Vikar Rasool Wani blamed the concerned authorities for not seriously considering the problem. And they only medicated the water but other problems were still very much there. He further said that about 95 per cent of the locals using spring water instead of water supplied by the PHE department. However, Superintendent Engineer PHE Doda Ghulam Rasool Sheikh outrightly rejected the allegation that his department was not been able to perform its duties efficiently. He explained that first of all they did chlorination and also made up all their loop holes. Assistant Executive Engineer (AEE) Nazir Ahmed said that they did super chlorination in the most affected areas and chlorination in other areas. He further said that the department was on work for giving better water facilities to locals.
