J&K Speaker appeals MLAs for cooperation in Assembly
9/25/2010 10:08:12 PM
Early Times Report
Srinagar, Sept 25: Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly Speaker Mohammad Akbar Lone has appealed to MLAs to extend their full cooperation in the smooth and successful conduct of the House proceedings during the upcoming session.
"Legislators would be provided ample time and full opportunities to seek information from the Government on the public-centric issues, which is their primary role and responsibility," Lone said after chairing a meeting yesterday to finalise arrangements for the six-day session beginning on September 30.
The Speaker said he expected free and frank discussions on important public issues in the best traditions of Parliamentary democracy.
"Every MLA is within his rights to make the Government accountable," he said while referring to the significance of Question Hour.
Asserting that Question Hour constitutes most important part of legislative business, Lone said every effort would be made for ensuring smooth running of Question Hour.
"This session throws an ideal opportunity to the legislators to raise issues of public importance and seek their redressal from the Government in a democratic spirit," he added.
The six-day session is expected to be a heated affair as opposition People's Democratic Party (PDP) is likely to rake up the issue of alleged human rights violations like the Macchil fake encounter and the ongoing unrest in the Valley.
BJP and National Panthers' Party (NPP), who have a combined strength of 14 MLAs in the House, are likely to raise governance issues during the session. Lone underlined the importance of the forthcoming session for the legislators to highlight public issues and seek their redressal.
The Speaker directed Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir, Asgar Hassan Samoon to monitor the arrangements personally and make sure that all facilities are provided to the legislators.
The Speaker also stressed on making elaborate security arrangements for the ministers and MLAs both inside and outside the Assembly.
Besides Samoon, those who attended the meeting include Secretary General Administration Department Mohammad Sayeed, IGP (Kashmir) S M Sahai, IGP (Security) Farooq Ahmed, Secretary (Law) GH Tantray and District Development Commissioner (Srinagar) MA Kakroo.
