9/26/2010 12:00:58 AM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Sept 25: Solving the sensational murder of Indica taxi driver Gurpreet Singh, police have apprehended two of the accused from Amritsar in Punjab.
Gurpreet (23), son of Mohan Singh of Nanak Nagar, was on September 3 murdered near Nagrota here and his body was thrown in a roadside nullah.
The accused, who hired the Indica from Katra on September 3 after having darshans of Mata Vaishnodevi in Trikuta Hills, had murdered Gurpreet to snatch the taxi from him.
His hands were tied with a piece of cloth and the body bore severe injury marks on head, neck and face.
Police sources said the Indica (5270/JK02X) was owned by Harjeet Singh of Nanak Nagar and Gurpreet was its driver.
As no clues were found to the identity of the accused from the murder site, a special police team was constituted under the supervision of additional SP (rural) Mohan Lal to unravel the mystery.
During investigation at Katra, Tata sumo driver Rajinder Kumar told police that he had taken three Punjabi speaking passengers to Gurpreet at about 1 pm on September 2 as they wished to hire an AC taxi for Jammu.
They gave Rs 500 to travel agent Rajesh Kumar against the booking of Indica. Rajesh gave Rs 400 to Gurpreet and kept Rs 100 with him as his commission.
Rajinder also told police that he had seen the passengers with Gurpreet at several places en route to Jammu. The footage of CCTVs was then shown to Rajinder and Rajesh to identify the passengers. On the basis of the CCTV footage, a sketch of the passengers was prepared and circulated to print and electronic media. Copies of the sketches were also pasted at railway stations, taxi stands, bus stands and other prominent places in J&K, Punjab and other neighbouring states, the sources added.
Police teams were also despatched to these areas. At Amritsar, a police party came to know that a sketch matched with the features of notorious criminal Kulvinder Singh alias Kinda of Jatyala Manjgi, Jullandar, who was putting up in a rented house at Guru Nanak Colony, Amritsar.
Policemen in civvies were then deployed around the rented house. Kinda was ultimately apprehended by police from there at about 6 pm on September 22.
During questioning, Kinda confessed to have murdered Gurpreet. He said on August 30, he along with Pargat Singh alias Pagga of Taran Taran, Amritsar, and Dharampal Gujjar of Kote Patuei in Sikar, Rajasthan, left for Katra.
However, reaching Jammu, they went to Rathana in R S Pura and spent the night in the house of their friend Ramandeep Singh. On August 31, they along with Ramandeep left for Katra and then to the holy cave shrine of Mata Vaishnodevi to have darshans of the goddess.
After darshans, they came back to Katra on September 1 and spent the night at Ajay Yatri Niwas. They checked out on September 2 and hired Gurpreet's taxi.
On way to Jammu, they planned to snatch the taxi from him. First they stopped at Trikuta Cafeteria near Katra and then at Bantalab on the national highway while searching for a suitable place to execute the crime.
After crossing TCP Nagrota, they realized that they had arrived close to Jammu city and then asked the driver to stop the taxi as they wanted to vomit. While Gurpreet stopped the taxi, all of them overpowered him, tied his hands and then strangulated him to death.
They later threw his body in the nearby nallah.
After snatching Indica, they drove to Punjab and sold the cab for Rs 45,000 to someone at Taran Taran. Police teams have been sent to Punjab and Rajasthan for the recovery of vehicle and arrest of the accused.
Kinda and Pargat were arrested and brought to Jammu. Their identification parade was carried here in the presence of a magistrate. They were booked in a murder case.
