| CPMF jawans to be insured for Rs 10 lakh | | | New Delhi, Oct 28 The government today announced its decision to give Rs 10 lakh life and disability insurance cover to the 700,000 jawans from various Central Para Military Forces (CPMF) in the country.
This will be in addition to the Rs 300,000 they get in case of death or disability while performing their duty.
The announcement was made by Home Minister Shivraj Patil while addressing jawans at the CRPF’s 67th Raising Day celebrations here today.
A CRPF spokesman said the CRPF, which had already implemented the decision to insure each jawan for Rs 10 lakh by deducting a nominal amount from his salary, would now have an insurance cover of Rs 23 lakh including the Rs 300,000 insurance in case of death and disability sustained during duty.
Jawans of other CPMF, in comparison, will be insured for Rs 13 lakh each.
Mr Patil, while acknowledging the role of the CRPF in maintaining the internal security of the nation, said the jawans and their families must be taken care of by the society.
He assured that all the pending proposals of CRPF for housing and infrastructure would be cleared by the government and also announced a one-time grant of Rs one crore for setting up a group housing society of CRPF personnel.
The Home Minsister stressed that the jawans must be provided livable accommodation and workable infrastructure.
For this, he said, the government had sanctioned the use of Security Related Funds for setting up of good quality temporary structures at operational areas.
For the families of the Jawans, Mr Patil called for development of good quality campuses around the country which would provide housing, educational and sports facilities.
Lauding the role of women in the force, Mr Patil said that given the increasingly global acceptance and accolades for CRPF’s Mahila contingent, it is high time their proportion was increased in the force.
He expressed confidence that the ‘all-women’ company of CRPF women that is going on a peacekeeping mission to Liberia, would once again prove successful.
In his welcome address, CRPF Director General J K Sinha said the force had notched up some notable successes against terrorists and insurgents this year.
He said this was made possible due to the stress on intelligence gathering and launching of proactive operations. He also highlighted the varied role of the force since independence, the sacrifices made during the Chinese and Pakistani aggressions and the valour shown during the terror attack on Parliament and at Ayodhya.
The Home Minister took the salute at the parade and also gave away medals for gallantry to jawans and officers.
