Srinagar, Sep 26: A day after Centre advised Jammu and Kashmir to open schools, State Education Minister Peerzada Mohammad Sayeed today announced a comprehensive plan for restarting the learning process and holding of annual examinations in the Valley. He also disclosed that the Centre has sanctioned Rs 100 crore for improving the education infrastructure.
"We have formulated a plan to reopen all the schools in the rural as well as urban areas, including Srinagar city from tomorrow," Sayeed told here after chairing a meeting of the officials of the education department.
He said the department will ensure that the students of the valley do not lose a precious academic year due to the ongoing unrest.
Regarding the availability of transport for the convenience of teachers and students, the Minister said that additional buses have been pressed into service on various routes in Srinagar for which Divisional Commissioner has already issued road map whereas all buses of Private and Government Schools will also run wherever the schools are located.
"We will take the necessary steps. Transport facility will be provided to the staff on 11 routes in the city and identity cards of the teaching and non-teaching staff will be treated as curfew passes," the minister said. He said the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah yesterday chaired a meeting in which he directed all security agencies to facilitate the movement of the students and staff even if curfew is in place.
Replying to a question, Peerzada acknowledged that some affluent families have sent their children outside the State while one local school has sent 12th class batch for studies outside the State. He said "we owe responsibility of 11 lakh students of Kashmir Valley, majority of them belong to poor families who cannot study outside Kashmir".
Sayeed said parents should send their wards to schools as the annual examinations for all the classes, including Secondary and Senior Secondary, will be held on time. "Examinations will be held in time but in case any student is not able to appear on the given date due to disturbance or violence, a re-examination will be held at a later date," he added.
Sayeed said while the secondary school examination (10th standard) for students enrolled in schools will begin from October 25 followed by Senior Secondary (12th standard) from November 2. More than 3.25 lakh students are registered with the JK Board of School Education for secondary and senior secondary classes and scheduled to appear in these exams.
The education department has established 1935 examination centres to conduct the annual examinations, which are held in autumn every year due to extreme cold during winter months. The announcement of the examination schedule came a day after Union Home Minister P Chidambaram advised the Jammu and Kashmir government to open all schools.
