| Two detainees helped others in recharging SIMs | | DG prisions pays surprise visit to Kot Bhalwal Jail | | Jammu, October 28:-Two detainees in the Kot Bhalwal Jail, Altaf Chowdhary belonging to Hizbul Mujahideen militant outfit, and a local criminal,Gurmeet Singh, sentenced under section 302, were spotted extending help to others keeping cellphones inside the jail premises. The duo had been responsible for securing SIM cards for mobile phones and for providing facilities for recharging the SIMs. This was conveyed to the Director General Prisons, M.K.Mohanty,during his surprise visit to the jail on Saturday. According to Jail sources, Mr Mohanty was informed that Altaf Chowdhary and Gurmeet Singh had a group of jail inmates on toes who used to be on their beck and call. When Mr Mohanty visited their barracks he was surprised to find the barracks allotted to Altaf and Gurmeet tastily decorated. Mr Mohanty was informed that while Altaf remained in touch with militants in Srinagar on cell phone his associate, Gurmeet, developed links with some Punjab militants. The duo would seek help from their junior inmates in washing their linen, and in attending to all the chores they were allotted. Jail sources said that Altaf and Gurmeet had created an awe not only among other inmates but among some wardens who stood helpless while watching them running a parallel Government. During Mr Mohanty’s visit a couple of mobile chargers and adapters were recovered from within the jail premises. Mr Mohanty is said to have directed the jail staff to be vigilant and carry out round the clock checking of each barrack so that no militant was able to use cell phones or establish links with subversives in the state. It may be mentioned that recovery of mobile telephone on October 19 followed by SIM cards had rocked the state administration ringing alarm bells. After the recovery was made, state government woke up from its deep slumber and is now contemplating installtion of mobile phone jammers inside high security jail to prevent militants and notorious criminals to stay in touch with their contacts outside the jail on mobile phones. |
