| Jammuites, ladakhis terms 8-point initiative Kashmir centric | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Sept 27: The Centre's eight point initiative on Kashmir has generated a lot of resentment among the people in Jammu and Ladakh regions who term it a Kashmir centric package and betrayal with the other two regions of the state.
People across all religions in these two divisions of the state are not satisfied with the initiative saying the Government has totally betrayed them and holding of talks with the representatives of Jammu by All Parties Parliamentary Delegation was only an eyewash.
No one is against the peace initiative in Kashmir but at the same time the Government was supposed to redress the problems of the people of Jammu and Ladakh regions who are at receiving end since last 63 years, said Vivod Gupta a BJP leader from Rajouri. The successive state governments ignored these two regions and concentrated on Kashmir, he added.
He said ``though we had high hopes on present All Party Parliamentary delegation which visited the state recently that it would do justice to the hapless people of these regions but the same has not happened and we continue to remain at receiving end''.
Expressing his dismay over the eight point Centra's formula, Pavitar Singh convener Jammu Peoples Forum (JPF) said while Rs five lakh were sanctioned for those families who lost one member of their family in the firing during last over three months turmoil in Kashmir Valley, the same treatment was not given to Jammu region. He said the people killed in police firing in Mendhar recently as well as the 2008 Amarnath land row agitation martyrs were completely ignored by the Government. This shows the double standards of the Government towards the other two regions and such policies will not work in future now, he added.
This is a total cheating with Jammu region said Satish Poonchi, chairman Jammu Peoples Front. By applying different yardsticks for the people of the two regions the Centre has proved that it was too biased against the Jammu region. Why Rs five lakh ex -gratia for people in Kashmir and less in Jammu. Is the blood of Jammu people black, he asked?
Asgar Ali a MSC Agriculture student from Kargil district of Ladakh has also expressed his dismay over the treatment and raw deal given by the Government to the Jammu and Ladakh regions. Ali said the people who waged a war against the nation in Kashmir and challenged its sovereignty and integrity have been given economic package while the youth of Kargil who worked shoulder to shoulder with Indian army during Kargil war have been totally ignored. This speaks volumes about the double standards of the Government.
“During the war we were designated as army in civil dress as the Kargil youth did a yeoman's job during the Kargil war on border but later no one paid heed to our woes,” he added.
The Muslims of Kargil are patriotic Indians and they gather in shivering cold to celebrate the Republic Day in open but there is no package for them while those who revolt against the nation are giving preference, he said.
Asgar who blamed the separatists in Kashmir for playing with the career of thousands of students in Valley including the hundreds from his home district who had come to Kashmir for higher studies asked the Government to act tough against the separatists and anti -national elements. ``I am a Muslim from J&K, but I feel proud to be an Indian and same my other community members in Kargil'', he added. |
