Fear stricken moderates toeing hardliner Geelani’s line | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Sept 28: Contrary to their stance in the past, moderate separatists which are represented by Yasin Malik and Mirwaiz Umar Farooq have begun of late toeing the line of action adopted by hardliner Syed Ali Shah Geelani. They are almost playing second fiddle to Geelani, who has so far managed to keep himself in news. The moderates have seemingly lost the space, they once enjoyed across Kashmir valley. They have been with only one option which is endorsing the calls for shutdown and protest rallies given, from time to time,by the latter during the last over three and a half months. Moderates maintain that they have no other alternative but to follow the footsteps of Geelani because during the last over three months of turmoil and civilian unrest, the hardliner has been running the show in Kashmir valley. The leader said that they have no other alternative but to follow Geelani. The latest instance which speaks volumes about the compulsions on the part of moderates to endorse whatever stance Geelani has taken on any issue. When the government of India announced an 8-point package for Jammu and Kashmir, Geelani was the first to reject it saying that it is eyewash. Geelani wants India to announce granting right to self-determination to the people of the troubled state. Moderates did not immediately react to the peace package. They announced that the matter would be discussed and decided by the executive committees of the separatist factions. And on Monday Molvi Umar farooq too rejected the 8-point package. APHC leader said “It is not fear of Geelani that forced us to reject the package but the r ejection is the outcome of our bitter experience we had between 2003 and 2006 when the successive central Governments initiated dialogue with us." He said that the dialogue was suspended without any formal notification and hence, he concluded that they have no trust in the government." He said that while announcing the 8-point package, centre ignored core issue of Kashmir. Hurriyat leader maintained that even if the valley shows signs of peace, it would be a short-lived affair. He maintained that if Delhi is interested in the restoration of peace not only in Jammu and Kashmir but in the entire South Asian region, it should initiate dialogue with Islamabad where the representatives of the people of Jammu and Kashmir were involved. However, Kashmir watchers believe that if the centre announces certain other concessions, including employment package, additional funds for development and modification in the devolution of political and financial powers to the state, chances for restoration of peace could be bright. They said that engaging Islamabad in sustained dialogue could relegate the separatists to the background.
