| Two fruit sellers penalized for weighing less | | | JAMMU OCT-28- The Legal Metrology Department has booked two shopkeepers and imposed a fine of Rs.8000 each for less weighment. Acting on a complaint lodged by a tourist that fruit sellers were cheating tourists by selling apple apples claiming to be of 20 Kg but actual weight is far less than paid for, conducted raids at different fruit sellers at Shiv Market Railway Station here. The Department in a hand out claimed that the officers of the Department on the spot-checked the actual weight of the apple boxes being sold to three tourists. The boxes were found to be less than six to eight kgs in weight against 20 kgs as claimed by the fruit sellers. The manipulations were made in weighing scales, the handout claimed. Both the shopkeepers were booked under section 39 (2) of Weights and Measures Act 1997 and a fine of Rs.8000 each imposed on both the defaulters for less weighment and serious warning issued to other traders. Anybody found indulging in cheating the consumers would have to face the legal proceedings as warranted under the Act, the release added.
