Opposition ‘offensive’ against NC-Cong govt during session | >>Legislative party meetings of all parties today to draw up strategy >>CM convenes meeting of allies, Cong to hold one separately | | Early Times Report Jammu, Sept 28: : With all political parties, mainly in opposition gearing up to draw line of action to be adopted in the Autumn session of Legislative Assembly, the countdown for an apparently hot and stormy session in the J&K has begun. Opposition PDP, BJP and Panthers Party have convened their Legislative Party meetings in Srinagar tomorrow in which they will discuss the strategy to corner the coalition. In keeping with the tradition of coalition dharma, the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has also convened meeting of allies, NC and Congress being the main partners. The main opposition party PDP and its leader in the House Mehbooba Mufti has summoned the legislators of her party for a crucial meeting convened tomorrow in which the Legislators will discuss threadbare the issues to be raked up in both the Houses of Legislature. Though conveneing of Legislative Party meeting is a tradition almost all parties follow one day ahead of the session, but this time the meeting of the parties, particularly those in Opposition assumes significance as the Autumn session is coinciding with a situation which is till far from being normal in Kashmir. The entire valley was in turmoil and continuous protests for over three months- a critical period during which NC led coalition government came in for sharp criticism from all quarters, for its failure to contain the unrest. “In the meeting the party will take into account the unprecedented situation in Valley and look into the reasons in depth which caused this………PDP Legislators will also take into consideration the recent response of the Union government to this situation, particularly in the backdrop of the All Party Delegation’s visit to Valley”, said PDP senior leader and MLA Bandipore Nizamuddin Bhat. The party is going to adopt a strategy which will not necessarily incorporate the raising of issues just for the sake of opposition, Bhat said emphaising that this session assumes importance in many ways and therefore the role of PDP has to be more responsible, people oriented. “PDP is really worried for the plight of people……… we will respect the sentiments of the people and try to address the points which will provide some succor to the masses”, he maintained.
BJP , which is the second largest opposition party with 11 MLAs, will corner the government on the issues centered around "regional discrimination", this time ther talk will become loud in the backdrop of the allegation that there has been discrimation with Jammu and Ladakh regions of the state by not adequately incorporating in the Centre's eight-point package.”The role of BJP will be aggressive in the House………the main talking points would be 8 point package in which there is brazen discrimination be that grant of ex gratia , release of people under PSA or compensation for the economic losses…”, said a BJP leader maintaing that both Centre and state government has yet to respond to the related issues of Amarnath land agitation in Jammu. The party will take on the government for this etp motherly treatment with Jammu and on other political fronts too. While the party leadership decided its line of action on Monday at Jammu Circuit House, a formal Legislative Party meeting will be held in Srinagar tomorrow.
"The Jammu and Ladakh regions have been completely ignored in the eight-point package by the Centre. While we are not opposed to the Rs five lakh compensation to the kin of the youth killed in the Valley, those killed in the Amarnath land row agitation in Jammu have been ignored," senior BJP leader Ashok Khajuria said.Instead of paying compensation to the 17 youth killed in summer of 2008, there are cases pending against them.Khajuria along with some MLAs reached Srinagar today while other are scheduled to leave tomorrow.
Jammu and Kashmir National Panthers' Party, which has three MLAs and one member in the Upper House is also all set to corner government son a host of issues concerning the people. “Apart from the issue of Delimitation and discrimination with Jammu , the thrust of the Panthers Legislators would be on mis governance and non performance of coalition government.
"The government is visible only in the press releases issued by its Information Department and carried in the newspapers……..but the fact remains that they have lost credibility ……the government writ does not run anywhere …….the administrative machinery has completely collapsed and the political apparatus is in shambles”, said Harsh Dev Singh, leader of J&K Panthers Party. There is nothing visible on the ground ... This government has failed miserably and has lost the moral right to continue in office," Singh alleged.
While the Congress, main ally of the coalition government has conevend meeting of its Legislative Party party in the afternoon at around 3 PM at Assembly Secretariat, NC quarters till late in the evening today did not elaborate as to when the party is separately holding meeting of its Legislators. However, a joint meeting of all allies will precede dinner hosted by CM Omar Abdullah. In this meeting the allies will discuss as to what strategy the partners will adopt in countering a stormy and aggressive opposition during the week long session of Legislature.
