Power nerve line for economic development: Omar | Jointly inaugurates SEWA Hydel Project, with Union Minister | | Early Times Report Kathua, Sept 29: Describing power development as nerve line in the sustained economic development and industrialization, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today said that his government has flagged this sector as one of the most important concerns. Jointly inaugurating 120 MW SEWA Hydel Project with Union Minister for Power, Sushil Kumar Shinde at village Mashka, about 40 kms. from Basholi in Kathua district of Jammu division today, Omar Abdullah said that multi-faceted approach has been introduced to harness hydro electric potential of the State. The 120 MW SEWA-II has been constructed by the NHPC at a cost of Rs. 1061 crore. The dam of the power project is situated at village Ghatti about 80 Kms. from Basholi in Kathua district of Jammu division and 150 kms from Lakhanpur. The Power Station is at village Mashka at the junction of river Ravi and SEWA tributary. The Chief Minister said that various power projects with the generation capacity of about 4000 MWs have been conceived by the State Power Development Corporation and are at various stages of execution at present. “Our endeavour is to generate sufficient energy for the industrial development, commercial use besides household utilization”, he added. Speaking on the occasion, Union Power Minister, Sushil Kumar Shinde lauded Omar Abdullah’s dynamism and innovative approach to fast track the development process in the State and bring about healthy economic transformation. Shinde said that Union Government would extend its all help to the State Government headed by Omar Abdullah in its endeavour to harness maximum power potential. “NHPC is already constructing various projects in the State and we would like to extend our cooperation in the future too”, he said. Union Minister said under the leadership of Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh and UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi, India has progressed in all fields of life. “Power generation is receiving priority attention in the development process” he said adding that there has been tremendous development in power sector during the tenures of UPA Government. The Union Power Minister said that four ITIs are run by NHPC in the State to train the local youth in electricity related trades. “Another ITI will be established in the State soon to enhance the training imparting capacity”, he said. The Parliament Member, Lal Singh in his speech welcomed the Chief Minister and the Union Minister and expressed gratitude for inaugurating the SEWA Hydel Power Project. He said that the project would not only provide additional electricity but help in a big way to generate economic activities in the backward areas of Basholi.
