Jammu, Sept 29: Ahead of the Allahabad High Court's verdict on Ayodhya title suits on Thursday, an alert has been sounded in Jammu to maintain peace, communal harmony and law and order, police said.
"Police and other security agencies have been put on alert. Peace committees of various religions have been set up in the districts to maintain communal harmony, peace and law and order," senior officials said.
Reviewing the law and order situation here today Divisional Commissioner, Jammu Zone, Pawan Kotwal and Inspector General of Police, Jammu Zone, Ashok Gupta directed the District Police Chief to hold interactions with the peace committees in their districts.
State Director General of Police Kuldeep Khoda has asked senior police officers to maintain close coordination with each other and directed them to deal firmly against anyone trying to disturb peace and tranquillity in the region.
Adequate forces are available to deal with any situation in the region, DGP said.
Districts have been divided into security and peace zones and all these zones have peace committees with prominent citizens, religious persons and people of various faiths and walks of life as members, he said.
These peace committees will be instrumental in maintaining communal harmony and brotherhood, he said.
As the much awaited verdict on Ayodhya is likely to be announced tomorrow, apart from beefing up security in the winter capital, Police officials have been asked to keep watch on ''anti-social'' elements.
''We have beefed up the security in and around the peripheries of the city especially in the sensitive areas with the additional deployment of CRPF and IRP troops,'' M K Dwivedi, Deputy Commissioner Jammu said while speaking to a news agency.
''Since the issue is sensitive , there are apprehensions anti-social elements may try to create tension", the DC said maintaining that it was on this account as a precautionary measure that surveillance is being kept on such elements,'' For this a list of ''anti-social'' elements having communal or criminal bent of minds, has also been prepared.
