Absolute normalcy still miles away | Geelani's "Azadi' dream selling hot cakes; Centre, state clueless | | Syed Junaid Hashmi EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Sept 29: With both Union Home Ministry and Jammu and Kashmir government bowing to dictates of hardliner separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani, return of absolute normalcy across Kashmir valley has become seemingly impossible. And if the separatists are to be believed, situation is likely to worsen in the days ahead. Among the separatists, Geelani has already foreseen the future and has been making pronouncements of Kashmiris 'struggle for freedom' being in the decisive phase. The old hawk has begun terming Chief Minister Omar Abdullah's administrative failure and New Delhi's inapt handling of Kashmir situation as his victory. Beginning with five point formula for restoring normalcy across Kashmir valley, New Delhi's all party delegation's surprise and scheduled visit to Geelani's residence emboldened him. It is on this count that within days of delegations return from the valley, Geelani talked about necessity of Kashmir's accession with Pakistan. Not only this, he has hijacked the entire police and administrative set-up in Kashmir valley. Ask even a layman in Kashmir and he would tell you about Geelani's increasing popularity especially among the teenagers and youth. He is calling the shots while the police and CRPF can be seen haplessly following his so-called agitational calendar. The civil society of Kashmir valley has gone into hibernation. And, it was shocking to note that they could not stage even a meek protest when Geelani announced 'no education, no schools' formula for 'Azadi', something which is unheard of in a civilized society. He mocked at Union Home Minister P. Chidambram asking him to shut up and stop giving lessons to Kashmiris about the importance of education. For Geelani, there exist no government, no police and no administration. This can be gauged from the fact that on Monday, when the valley schools opened partially after around three months, Geelani termed it a conspiracy to fail 'Kashmiris struggle for freedom'. Some of his henchman pelted stones on the school buses and also threatened private schools owners of dire consequences. Claiming that the so-called freedom struggle is in the decisive phase, Geelani advised parents to keep their children away from schools and follow the agitational calendar religiously. Geelani's words "Freedom struggle is in the decisive phase" reminds one of the pre-1953 era. It needs no mention that the every Kashmiri leader, right from 1948 to 2010 has been selling dream of unachievable 'Azadi' and unthinkable "Right to Self-determination' to Kashmiri people. Their favorite one liner has been "Our struggle is in the decisive phase and freedom is few steps away". Geelani is saying nothing new and has been repeating what won his predecessors millions. One does not need to argue much and instead accept willingly that Azadi, accession with Pakistan and Right to Self-determination are all unachievable and unthinkable just because multicultural, multilingual and multi-religious India cannot afford carving out of a nation which would essentially belong to Muslims at a time when the original inhabitants of Kashmir valley (read Kashmiri Pandits) are living a pathetic life. Like common Kashmiri Muslims, they are weeping and wailing but none is there to lend an ear to their grievances. Besides, it is known fact that world has rejected both unilateralism and fundamentalism. Yet, the common Kashmiri is being sold the dream which has very few takers across the globe. More importantly, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and his administration including police and paramilitary forces have all miserly failed to take away the glare of publicity from Syed Ali Shah Geelani. Kashmir based media has been giving extensive coverage both to Geelani and his agitational calendar. In this milieu, one would like to plead with Kashmiris especially civil society to come out of hallucination and stop dreaming about something which has brought nothing but misery to Kashmiris. |
