New Delhi, SEPT 30: In a goodwill gesture, nine Indians came to the rescue of a Pakistani national at a city hospital, donating blood for him.
The Indians donated blood for Pakistani patient Abdul Razaq, who underwent a liver transplant on September 28 at the Medanata Medcity in Gurgaon.
40-year-old Razaq, a resident of Lahore in Pakistan, was diagnosed with liver failure due to hepatitis C. Doctors had advised immediate surgery which would require use of 10 to 15 units of blood.
"I did not know whom to look for help. Family members were not around. I did not know whom to turn for help in a foreign land for 10 to 15 units of blood," Dr Mohammad Khalid, Razaq's doctor who had accompanied him, said.
"He was suffering from end stage liver failure, we advised immediate surgery. In such surgeries, there is huge blood loss and the provision of blood is made by the hospital against exchange of blood, which is contributed by friends and relatives of the patient," Dr A S Soin, chairman of Medanta Institute of Liver Transplantation and Regenerative Medicine, said.
"At first I called up Mulvinder Singh who I had befriended in the hospital. He was here for the treatment of his father. I called him and told him what I needed. He promised help immediately," said Dr Khalid.
At night time, Dr Khalid also went to the Jarsa village which was close to the hospital looking for help.
"I did not know how many people would come from Singh's side. So I went to the nearby village. Some elderly gentlemen were seated. I introduced myself as a Pakistani national and requested for blood donation. One of them told me to go back to the hospital promising that he would send his boys for the required work."
Surprisingly, on the morning of September 28, the day the transplant was conducted, "Nine people were here to donate blood for Razaq," a nurse with the hospital said.
"The surgery was successful and he is recovering now," Dr Soin said.
Dr Khalid said, "I am obliged to those nine people who turned up to help even without considering twice that it would save the life of a Pakistani national."
