PDP justifies boycotting assembly session | | | Early Times Report Srinagar, Oct 1: People’s Democratic Party (PDP) today justified its decision to boycott ongoing Assembly Session in Srinagar by saying that National Conference (NC) led government has eroded sanctity of the house. In an official handout issued here today, PDP leadership said that it decided to boycott the session of the state legislature only after it was convinced that sanctity of the House had been eroded. “We have realized that issues of public interest to be raised by the members would remain ignored by the ruling coalition, “said senior PDP leader Nizam-ud-Din Bhat. When asked whether boycott of the Assembly session was part of the party "defeatist" approach, Bhat said "We believe in fighting for the cause of people but it is useless to plead the same when the government does not want to listen.” He further said that during the last over three months, 109 people have been killed while no action had been taken against the killers. In reply to another question, Bhat said that no purpose will be achieved by merely attending the Assembly session. We would have participated in the debates and discussions if the government would have been responsive and taken serious cognizance of our complaints. PDP leader said that despite the government's announcement of having formulated an ambitious employment policy, number of unemployed youth is swelling. He said that agencies entrusted with the task of selecting candidates for filling vacant posts and new posts in different government departments would waste months together on finalizing selection list. He urged the government to carry out the exercise on giving jobs to the unemployed youth on priority basis. While referring to the development scenario, Bhat blamed the ruling coalition for having sidelined development of the state. In this connection, he stated that number of old developmental scheme were yet to be completed despite having crossed the stipulated dates by several months. Bhat said that no major new schemes had been taken in hand and with the result, people continue to suffer owing to power and drinking water shortage. He said recent damage caused by floods and drought indicates that the government had not taken in hand any major scheme for upgrading flood and drought control. Meanwhile, on order to induct Christian Community in PDP and strengthen this Cell, senior leader of the party E-Peter has been nominated as convener of Christian Community Cell of PDP by the Party President. He will be able to highlight routine problems of this community.
