Omar usually kept in dark by police authorities: official sources | | | Early Times Report Jammu,Oct 2: If senior Government circles are to be believed Chief Minister,Omar Abdullah,is not invariably informed about the steps the state administration or the police plan to take against newspaper offices and the media men. While referring to Chief Minister's ignorance about the police raid on the printing presses and on manhandling of media men and four journalists, official sources said that Omar Abdullah expressed unawareness when he told the Assembly on Friday that he was not informed about the raids and about the seizure of newspapers. Omar had informed the agitated members of the Assembly that he would seek a report from the police chief and those responsible for the ordering seizure of newspaper bundles and other curbs on mediamen would be subjected to disciplinary action. Asked whether the Chief Minister was simply pretending innocence and ignorance to escape scathing attack on him by the opposition members’ official sources said "No Omar is not pretending. Since he has not been informed about the police action in advance, he had no knowledge about it.” In reply to a question the sources said under rules the civil and police administration were supposed to inform in advance chief minister about their plan of action and seek his approval. One senior bureaucrat said that events during the last over three months in the Kashmir valley had caused a bit of confusion in the state administration and the police with the result the much needed coordination between the ruling coalition members and the civil and police administration is missing. He said these events had forced the Chief Minister to frequently shuttle between Srinagar and Delhi with the result the police authorities had no time to inform or seek approval from the Chief Minister for various steps that were to be taken for maintaining law and order. Experts have suggested to Omar Abdullah to initiate steps so that the Friday incidents were not repeated. These experts expressed concern over the continued onslaughts on the fourth estate in Jammu and Kashmir. They wanted the Government to review its stand on the media so that they are not harassed in future and steps were taken to carry out equal distribution of Government advertisements to the newspapers.
