10/3/2010 12:06:11 AM
KISHTWAR: A Harkat-ul-Jehad-e-Islami (HUJI) district commander and his deputy were apprehended by jawans of police and 11 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) from Sondar Pinjrari near here today.
Both of them were apprehended on a tip-off along with their weapons after a brief exchange of fire, police sources said.
They were identified as HUJI district commander Shabir Ahmed alias Imran, son of Gulam Nabi Shangar of Tander Dachhan, and his associate Zakir Hussain, son of Mohammad Sagar of Kursa Sounder near Dachan.
Both of them were hiding at Sondar Pinjrari. Sources said when troops came to know about it, they launched an operation in the area.
While the jawans were making searches, the militants fired at them. Fire was returned. Sources said though the militants made an attempt to flee after a brief gunbattle, the jawans caught hold of them. One pika gun, its 30 rounds and one pouch were recovered from them. Kulbir Singh, incharge district SP, Kishtwar, said Shabir, who had joined HUJI in 2004, was a close associate of HUJI commander Firdous Ahmed alias Dawood. After Dawood was killed in an encounter, Shabir had become commander, he added.
The SP said Zakir had joined the outfit in the recent past. Their another associate Mohammad Yasin alias Junaid was arrested from Tander on September 6 last, he added.
He said Shabir was injured in an encounter with security forces in the area on September 1 last, but had managed to escape, leaving an AK rifle and a 7.62mm SLR behind.
The apprehended HUJI militants were also involved in the killing of SPO Masood Ahmed at Krusa Tander on August 30 last.
