No investigation held in newspaper seizure | Police defy CM’s orders | | Early Times Report Jammu, Oct 2: Much to the dismay of the Valley based scribes the police chose to remain mum on the seizure of all the newspapers published from Srinagar Friday. The Chief Minister had ordered the police to investigate the matter and submit a report within twenty-four hours. The orders were issued on the floor of the Legislative Assembly when the matter was raised by some members. The police seized all the newspapers published from Srinagar in wee hours Friday and thus prevented their circulation. The seized newspapers were taken to police station Kothibagh. The Press Guild of Kashmir took serious note of the issue and apprised the Press Council of India of the development. The matter was also raised in the Legislative assembly by some members. The Chief Minister while tendering an unconditional apology said: “I have not issued the orders. I do not know why the newspapers have been seized.” Omar directed the police to investigate the matter and submit a detailed report within twenty-four hours. The scribes waited anxiously for the police report till late this evening but all in vain. The police have not even given the reason for the seizure. “This is how democracy functions in this state. By ignoring the orders, the police have conveyed in clear terms that they are answerable to none”, said a senior journalist. The scribes are angry for another reason as well. A senior videographer, Mairaj-ud-Din and a young journalist working for a New Delhi based news channel were roughed up by the police yesterday when they were on their way to the Assembly complex to cover the proceedings of the house. This is not the first time when the police have seized the newspapers or manhandled the scribes. On January 7, a photographer was shot at in Lal Chowk when he was capturing the aftermath of January 6 Fidayeen attack in his camera. The government ordered an enquiry but the report has not been made public till date. The frequent seizure of newspapers and manhandling of scribes forced the newspaper owners to suspend publication of newspapers indefinitely on July 18. However, the publication was resumed when senior officials of the Information Department intervened and assured scribes a free and fair deal. The assurance did not save the fourth estate from onslaught of the men in uniform. Recently the newspapers again suspended their publication for similar reasons. |
