Tarigami fails to break PDP’s boycott to Assembly
10/3/2010 12:08:07 AM
Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, Oct 2: CPI (M) State Secretary, Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami, has failed to motivate the principal opposition party, PDP, to resume its participation in proceedings of the current session of Legislative Assembly.
On day one of the autumn session on September 30th, PDP President Mehbooba Mufti had delivered a political speech during obituary references and announced her party’s decision of staying away from rest of the proceedings in absence of punishment to “killers of 109 Kashmiri martyrs”---civilians killed in Police and CRPF action in the last four months of turbulence in Kashmir valley.
On the following day, Speaker Mohammad Akbar Lone took a meeting with members of Assembly’s Business Advisory Committee (BAC) who unanimously favoured the suggestion of sending an interlocutor to motivate the PDP leadership to return to the proceedings. CPI (M) leader and MLA from Kulgam, Tarigami was selected as an interlocutor.
Sources said that over the decision taken by the BAC, followed by personal initiative of Speaker Akbar Lone, Tarigami today called on PDP chief, Mehbooba Mufti, and attempted to break her party’s boycott to rest of the brief autumn session. Ms Mufti, however, made it clear to her rare guest that it was not possible for members of her party to return to the Assembly in absence of a transparent action against killers of over a hundred Kashmiri civilians. Even as Tarigami sought to plead that he was not carrying any brief from the state government and that he had been actually assigned this job by the BAC, Ms Mufti refused to relent.
Sources said that Tarigami returned disappointed from Mufti’s official residence at Gupkar Road and communicated to Speaker Akbar Lone what exactly had transpired in his meeting with Ms Mufti. Sources said that on Monday next, BAC could meet yet again to discuss PDP’s continued boycott to entire session of the Legislature.
