Stress among troops draws army top brass attention

JAMMU, Oct 3: Following an increase in the incidents of suicides, or attempts to suicide by troops, who were part of counter-insurgency (CI) operations in the hinterland and on the Line of Control (LoC) in the state, due to "depression", army today said it was taking effective measures to reduce stress level among its jawans.
There is a report of a jawan, or two attempting on their lives almost once a week. And, the incident is everytime attributed to stress among jawans.
As part of its efforts to decrease the stress level among them, army today launched a major programme on dealing with mental health challenges faced by CI troops.
"The armed forces have insight into the mental health challenges being faced by troops and are taking effective measures to reduce stress among them in J&K," head of medicine department (HOM), northern command hospital, Udhampur, Maj Gen Harinder Singh said at the inauguration of the programme in Udhampur today.
The two-day continued medical education (CME) programme was inaugurated by northern command chief, Lt Gen B S Jaswal at the command hospital.
Maj Gen Singh said they were looking into various aspects, including "prevention, early detection, management and rehabilitation". Mental health education was being actively carried out to develop awareness in this field, he added.
The hospital commandant, Maj Gen D S Pathania said the stress related disorders were on the rise in the society.
"Both medical and non-medical fraternity should be aware of early changes in behaviour in a person to prevent drastic complication of such disorder," he said and added that early diagnosis and management of stress related and other psychiatric disorders were
needed.
"Lack of awareness and stigma attached to it (mental illness) further compounds the problem," he said and stressed on eduation and awareness to check the "silent epidemic".
The programme is being attended by more than 100 military and civil delegates from across the country.
