Centre likely to allow J&K to have more share from NHPC power projects | | | Early Times Report Jammu,Oct 3: The Congress led UPA Government in the centre plans to concede the demand of the Jammu and Kashmir Government for increased share for the power projects, built in the state by the NHPC. The state Government has raised this demand during the last over eight years alongwith the demand for the transfer of the Dul Hasti power project to the state sector. Official sources said that the state Government has, in its latest communication, urged the center to expedite the decision on increasing share of power projects under the control of the NHPC. In the communication, the central Government has been informed that as a result of the over three month long turmoil in the Kashmir valley the Power Development department could neither recover arrears nor collect the power tariff with the result there was a wide gap between the resources and the amount needed for purchasing additional power from the northern grid.
The state Government has reminded the center that in the wake of the ensing winter season the generation of all major power projects in the state was likely to drop by 40 to 60 per cent depending on the availability of water in the rivers of Jehlum, the Chenab and the Indus. The communication has also reminded the center that the ongoing public anger and resentment is partly the result of continued electricity shortage in the state.
Sources said that for the time being the center may not agree to transfer of Dul Hasti to the state sector because of the paucity of resources and expertise which could force the state to seek technical and financial assistance from the center for ensuring proper maintenance of the power project.
Indications are that the state's share may be increased to enable people to tide over the prolonged power shortage.Reports said that if and when the center would approve increase in power share from the NHPC projects the state Government will be directed to initiate measures for decreasing the level of power leakage which continues to range between 47 and 50 per cent. It will also ask the state Government to pool additional resources for upgrading the transmission system, for bringing all those who indulge in power theft by resorting to unauthorised connection.
