J&K losing out on central funds in absence of panchayat polls | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Oct 3: In absence of Panchayati Raj elections in the state, Jammu and Kashmir is losing at least Rs 229 crore annually meant for developmental schemes under the system. The state lost Rs 229 crore in terms of Central funds during the last financial year as the government did not hold panchayat elections, an official report on state finances said. The state government needs to implement the Panchayat Raj Act and hold elections to avail the benefits, it said. Meanwhile, minister for rural development and Panchayati Raj, Ali Mohmmad Sagar said holding of panchayat elections is one of the top most agendas of the state government and that it would be held very soon. He said ``by establishing panchayats across the state, we would be involving people at the grossroot-level in policy implementation and formulation, which forms the basis of the democratic setup’’.
