Wildlife week inaugurated at Mansar | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Oct 3: The wildlife week celebration organised by Department of Wildlife Protection started today by holding an impressive inaugural function on the embankment of Mansar lake which is the part of Mansar-Surinsar wildlife sanctuary. The programme comprised of local stake holders meet and a painting-cum-cultural function of school children drawn from surrounding schools. A large number of local residents and school children accompanied by their teachers gathered at the wildlife complex near the deer park. Professor S P S Datta, former HoD Environment Sciences, Jammu University was the guest of honour. Tahir Shawl, Wildlife Warden Jammu, Welcoming the gathering Shawl highlighted the importance of celebrating wildlife week and gave a brief account of week long-functions like symposia, painting competitions, stake holders’ meets, nature tours of school children to wildlife sanctuaries and Manda zoo, film shows on wildlife and awareness programmes on man-wild animal conflict etc, being held at various locations of Wildlife Division, Jammu. He also highlighted the threats to the ecology of these lakes like shrinking water level and depletion of indigenous flora and fauna . Upender Pachnanda, Conservator of Forests (wildlife) Jammu Region, while speaking on the occasion stressed on the need of striking balance between conservation and development. He further emphasised that coordinated efforts are required by various agencies for the sustained development and conservation of Mansar and Surinsar lakes. Prof S P S Datta while addressing the gathering informed that many species of fishes, planktons and coelenterates have disappeared from Mansar lake and warned that that unwise development may endangered the existence of these lakes. B L Sharma , Assistant Commissioner Revenue, Samba was also present on the occasion.
