Huge sums amassed through BEd counselling of absent candidates | Student leaders indulge in blackmailing, exploitation of ineligible administraors | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, Oct 3: The mushroom growth of student leaders in Jammu University (JU) over the past few years have now started showing repercussions, as they instead of highlighting and helping the cause of aggreived students busy now-a-day in obtaining personal benefits from administration using their influence and exploiting weaknesses of ineligible and incompetent administrators. It is openly visible in the campus that most of the students' leaders, representing various organizations or self styled ones with a small flock of students, have derailed from their mission and resorted to petty personnel issues. But, the JU administration has completely failed to keep them under check. This has recently been witnessed on the campus with many activities and protests lodged by these students group have apparently surfaced to have containing 'target specific' modus-operandii to settle their personnel claims, thus bringing bad repute to the organisations' integrity as well as well as the university itself. A current topic debated and protested by a significant students group against the Director Distance Education, Meenakshi Kilam quoting a reason remotely connected to any grievance later was identified as a "personal charge" launched against the department to get extension for the close friend of a student leader, who is working as contractual employee. "This has brought ignominy to whole of the university besides washing off the repose held upon these students groups by the university student," said a PG student from Department of Chemistry in JU, requesting anonymity. Later, the administration succumbed to the students' politics and nearly five contractual teachers were granted extension for next 89 days including one of them who have left the job six months back and presently serving as permanent government employee. When contacted, Director Distance Education, Meena-kshi Kilam said the extension given to the six contractual persons was not recommended by her and it was decision taken by the varsity administration. "I had sent a list for appointing 'required' persons and we have conducted interviews for all such posts. Six persons were given extension without our recommendation," she added. Similarly, a protest launched by another group against Special Secretary to the Vice Chancellor, Neeraj Sharma and Registrar, Dr P S Pathania was aimed at scoring personal interests. This time, they stepped up their tirade against, what they alleged, undue benefit to Neeraj Sharma and illegal appointment of some lecturers in DDE. A scrutiny to the episode revealed that the protests are also "target specific". "The internal politics in hierarchy brought student leaders to demonstrate against the some individuals. The University has recently issued a notification for the post of Registrar. Some university teachers and officials consider Neeraj Sharma as strong contender for the post and recent protests are organised to score the interests of all such teachers and officials," said sources. Sources further said the Chancellor of the university, N N Vohra, who is also the Governor of the State, has sought an explanation from varsity regarding "illegal extension" to some employees in DDE. "The varsity has sent an explanation clearing its stand vis-à-vis extension to employees," added sources. Sources maintained that several tenders of the varsity have been allotted in the name of student leaders' brothers and relatives, and that's why they always maintain pressure on the administration on one or the other pretext. Surprisingly, one of the officers in Colleges Development Council revealed that in the ongoing B.Ed admission counseling number of such leaders have earned a hefty sum in the shape of commission for facilitating counseling for specific colleges without the presence of candidate. He revealed that it's been a practice that number of student leaders comes everyday with a list of candidates and asks the officers deployed to facilitate counseling of absent outstation candidates. Even they get their things done without giving a single penny to the concerned persons but, charges Rs 1000 thousand per candidate. Reliably, five to six student leaders have amassed 50-60 thousand rupees through this process so far using their influence over the University officers and befooling the flock of stupid students. |
