This pattern of the education is meant to provide non-formal education in which the students can pursue better education through the distance mode. Hundreds of students left formal schooling due to various reasons such as less of school for further studies, poverty, and also militancy in the state. This will also help those students, who do not get time for regular studies. In these circumstances, there can not be any better option than the open schooling in the state. The J&K State Board of School Education (JKBOSE) had decided to start the open school and was inaugurated in 2003 but the open school could not be started due to unknown reasons. It was delayed many times. Many times, the date has been fixed by JKBOSE authorities but due to volatile conditions of the valley the date has been postponed every time, and hopes of the students shattered. According to the sources, under open schooling about 15 schools would be opened in Kashmir province whereas 42 in Jammu province. They, further, said that the proposal was initially for up to Class 10, which would be gradually upgraded to class 12th. When asked about the fee structure, they said that for a year, it would cost less than Rs 2,000. The students would also be provided study material. Talking to correspondent, Prof Desh Bandu Gupta commented that they could not relaunch their programme because of some official work as all the official education centers were located in Srinagar. He also said the open school was a step towards achieving cent per cent literacy in the state and it was the need of the hour. He further said that they would definitely relaunch the open schools after the “Darbar Move”.
