No traffic cop, no rope visible at Zebra crossings

JAMMU, Oct 4: For the convenience of pedestrians, traffic police started a special drive by launching zebra crossings at some of the areas where vehicular movement is on the higher side. The drive took off at Bikram Chowk and near Amar Singh Club on 1st October by IG (Traffic) Hemant Kumar Lohia along with other officials. On a particular day in order to educate pedestrians as well as the vehicle operators about the importance of zebra crossing, traffic police gave a demonstration by crossing the busiest road by putting rope barriers on both sides at Bikram Chowk. They further said that it was difficult for the pedestrian to cross the roads in the busiest areas of the city that is why idea of the city that is why idea of zebra crossing has been mooted and many vehicle owners event do not know the real meaning of it. No doubt, traffic a police started this process with a bang but within two days, when this reporter visited the zebra crossing at Bikram Chowk and near Amar Singh Club, he found contrary what traffic cops had said on the inaugural day. There was no traffic personal visible on either side of zebra crossing, nor was the rope as claimed by the said department. No doubt, traffic police started this thing to help the pedestrians to cross zebra crossing, but who will manage this in the long run. The make tall promises to ease out the traffic, but such claims fell flat when it is practically applicable on ground. Naresh Sharma, a university student said that traffic department started the launching of zebra crossing, but who will continue this show. When there is V.I.P movement, all of a sudden, the men in blue becomes visible, otherwise they are hardly seen. The lady cops also are helping them, but sill cannot run the show.
Munish, an employee said, these zebra crossings should be managed by traffic cops all the time, as it is very difficult for pedestrian to cross it, particularly at Bikram Chowk. There is always risk of accident in the area. Traffic department also claiming of starting traffics lights in near future for smooth conduct of traffic, it is good thing, but initially the department should try to place cops along with rope at these zebra crossings so that no untoward incident take place.
