DWP conducts school kids’ visit to Manda Zoo | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Oct 4: In connection with the wildlife week celebrations, Department of Wildlife Protection (DWP) Jammu organized a film show and visit of school children from various educational institutions of city to Manda Zoo here today. About 100 students from class 4th to 8th of different schools including Lawrence Public School Panjtirthi, Lawrence Public School Sidhra, Ved Mandir Bal Niketan Ambphala Jammu, Govt High School Bathindi, Govt High School Ghass Mandi Jammu, Shishu Niketan Anand Nagar Bohri, participated in this function along with their teachers. Many species of wild animals including leopard, black bear, leopard cat, porcupine, spotted deer, barking deer, goral, jungle cat, pea fowl etc. find refuge in Manda deer park set in Ramnagar Wildlife Sanctuary near Hotel Ashok Jammu. The objective of this visit was to educate school children about the wildlife of Jammu region and inculcate among them a sense of responsibility towards conservation of our depleting faunal species. The children had a round of all animal closures and watched wild animals and learnt about their behaviour, conservation status, feeding habits, their up keep and maintenance and health care. Wildlife officials interacted with the school children and their teachers and answered their queries regarding these animals. Uppender Pachnanda, Conservator of Forests (Wildlife) Jammu Region Jammu highlighted the importance of conservation of bio-diversity and stressed upon the need to educated children and young generation about their nature heritage. Tahir Shawl Wildlife Warden Jammu spoke about the importance of exposing children to the native flora and fauna and importance of conservation breeding programmes. Two wildlife documentaries viz, wildlife of Jammu & Kashmir and living with change-voices from Ladakh, were shown to the children at Nature Interpretation Centre, Manda. Sayeed Ahmed Range Officer Jammu, Majid Bashir Range Officer deer park and Dr. Ab Majid wildlife veterinarian conducted the visit to the deer park and interacted with the children.
