Nursing home act in J&K being amended: Minister | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT SRINAGAR, Oct 4: Saying that the existent Nursing Home Act of 1963 was inadequate, Minister for Health Sham Lal Sharma today said that the act is being updated to improve quality standard of Nursing Homes in the state. He said that a high level committee has been constituted to suggest measures in this regard and its report will be in place within a month. Any amendment if necessary would be made in the existent Act accordingly. Replying to supplementary on the question by Abdul Gani Vakil, the Minister said under the new guidelines Nursing Homes shall be categorized as per the service quality. He said that there was a dire need to encourage private sector for delivery of health care system in the State, adding that Jammu and Kashmir is the only state in the country where the public sector caters 90% of the Indoor patients rush. Minister admitted that the State as yet has no nursing regulatory body and the nursing training centers in the State get affiliations from Nursing Council of Chandigarh and Nursing Council of India, Delhi. Earlier, the Minister in his written reply informed the House that about 60 nursing homes are functioning in the state, of which seven nursing homes including five in Jammu and two in Kashmir division, have been closed for not complying with the directions and norms of the department. Minister said on SLPs filed by the proprietors of various Nursing Homes, the Supreme Court had given six months time to upgrade their facilities in accordance with the laid down norms which were further granted two extensions after 31 March 2010 and again after 30 April 2010. On the expiry of the dead line, the Health Department has ordered closure of seven Nursing Homes in the state. |
