Humiliated Congress must come out of the failed NC-led government
10/4/2010 11:27:00 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Oct 4: NC leader and uncle of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, Hazratbal MLA Mustafa Kamal, has again insulted and abused the Congress - the Congress with whose support the NC is misruling the sensitive border State of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K). Mustafa Kamal has denounced the former Deputy Chief Minister and Congress veteran Mangat Ram Sharma in downright language for his democratic and reasonable demand that the NC should be shown the door after it completes three years in office, that the Congress should rule the state after January 5, 2011 and that the next Chief Minister should be from Jammu province. He has also condemned Congress MP Madan Lal Sharma for the same reason. Madan Lal, like Mangat Ram, has expressed similar views and demanded that the next Chief Minister should be from the Congress party.
The Kashmir-centric and rabidly anti-Jammu Kamal has said that what Mangat Ram Sharma and Madan Lal Sharma have said only indicates that the Congress would ditch the NC the same way it ditched his father Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah in 1983. In fact, he has accused the Congress of ditching the Abdullah dynasty since 1953, when the Congress dethroned the Sheikh for his anti-national activities, including his move to set up a "Switzerland-type independent Kashmir" by hobnobbing with the United States. "The party is habitual of ditching NC on every front," Kamal has, in fact, said. Besides, he has asserted that the NC was handed over the state power in 2009 for a full term of six years or that there was nothing that could even remotely suggest that the NC would abdicate power in favour of the Congress after three years.
It is not for the first time that the Kamal Mustafa has ridiculed the Congress leaders and the Congress party. He, like all other members of the Abdullah family, has been consistently insulting the Congress leadership and the Congress party. This, notwithstanding the fact that the Congress has on occasions more than one accorded a very special treatment to the Abdullah dynasty. The Sheikh became the Wazir-e-Azam of J&K in 1947 much against wishes of the people of Jammu province, who had been ruling the state since 1846, only because of the Congress and Jawaharlal Nehru. The Sheikh again became the Chief Minister of the state in 1975 despite the fact that separatist outfit, Plebiscite Front, did not have a single legislator either in the Legislative Assembly or in the Legislative Council. Courtesy: The Congress. The Congress committed a grave blunder by abdicating power in favour of the Sheikh whose doubtful credential and anti-Jammu stance were too well-known.
It must be remembered that the Congress high command had taken this mind-boggling decision much to the chagrin of the Congress leadership in J&K. The Congress had been ruling the state since 1965 and this was the best period in the history of J&K, post-1947. By bringing the deflated Sheikh back to power, the Congress created a situation that has culminated into what is happening today in Kashmir. It was the Sheikh and his NC that queered the Indian pitch in Kashmir by raking up controversial issues and by creating doubts in the minds of the people of Kashmir about the nature of accession of the state to India. It was the Sheikh and his NC that painted the Indian laws black and communalized the whole of Kashmir polity by preaching secession and communalism. Why did the Congress bring the controversial Sheikh back to power? Only the Congress can answer this question. For the common people, it is still a riddle.
The Congress not only pampered the Sheikh, who created difficulties for the Indian state in Kashmir, but it also accorded a preferential treatment to Farooq Abdullah on a number of occasions. Farooq Abdullah would not have ruled the state even for a day, had not the Congress pardoned all of his crimes and overlooked his controversial actions. Significantly, Mustafa Kamal had also enjoyed the loaves and fishes of office when Farooq Abdullah ruled the state between 1996 and 2002.
What about the greenhorn-in-politics and rabidly anti-Jammu and Omar Abdullah, who has created for the Indian state some insurmountable difficulties? Omar Abdullah is in power in J&K only because of the Congress. Had there been any other party in power in New Delhi, it would have not only dismissed him for his acts of omission and commission, but would have also initiated proceedings against him for the speeches he has been delivering ever since the Congress took a wrong decision and handed over the state power to him. Mustafa Kamal should have been grateful to the Congress party for the simple reason that Omar Abdullah, who has ruined the state, is still in office. But he will not do so. He belongs to the Abdullah dynasty that has only cared for itself and none else.
The Congress must take cognizance of the Kamal's fulminations and act against the NC. Why should it be at the receiving end? And, why should it let down its Jammu constituency, which wants Omar Abdullah to go and Congress to take over? The Congress must come out of the coalition government, which has become thoroughly unpopular. No Congress leader and worker with any self-respect can afford to work with the unscrupulous and ungrateful NC. Jammu-based Congress leaders and ministers should immediately leave for New Delhi to meet the high command and ask it to rein in the likes of Mustafa Kamal who have been lowering the image of the Congress party in the eyes of the people. Their one-point agenda should be: Office of Chief Minister for Jammu today, if possible, and on January 5, 2011 in any case. Besides, all the Congress leaders and workers should make common cause with Mangat Ram Sharma and Madan Lal Sharma because they represent the Jammu sentiment. Jammu is what Jammu is; Jammu is not Kashmir's colony and hence, the office of Chief Minister must come to it.
