Interlocutors' list to be released soon; Peerzada says Rs 100 cr relief package for whole of J&K

JAMMU, Oct 4: While the Centre today said a group of interlocutors would soon be appointed to carry forward the peace process in J&K, education minister Peerzada Mohammad Syed said Rs 100 special central assistance would be utilised in whole of the state.
The group of interlocutors would be headed by a Congress leader of the rank of a union cabinet minister, according to official sources. Sources said home minister P Chidambaram was believed to have discussed the issue with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh during a one-on-one meeting this afternoon in which names of some senior Congress leaders were understood to have figured.
The name of union minister and Congress leader Prithviraj Chavan was believed to have been considered as the head of the group of interlocutors and other names were expected to be announced soon, sources said.
There was speculation that former chief minister Digvijay Singh could be among those considered but there was no confirmation. The appointment of interlocutors is part of the Centre's eight point peace initiative announced September 25.
Sources said most of the interlocutors would be from outside Jammu and Kashmir but would be having fair idea about the issues there. The issue of appointing Muslim, Hindu and women representative as interlocutors was also being considered, sources said and added that the chairman of the group would certainly be a close confidant of the prime minister.
The interlocutors, when appointed, would not limit their visit only to Srinagar but certainly travel to small towns like Baramulla, Anantnag, Sopore, Uri, Doda, Rajouri, etc.
They were required to interact with cross sections of people. Meanwhile, in reply to a question by Congress MLC Ravinder Sharma in the legislative council in Srinagar today, the education minister said the Rs 100 cr special assistance would be utilised in whole of the state.
He said schools with no boundary walls and less, or no infrastructure would be identified in all the districts and the money would be spent on them.
