Issue of Jammu Central University rocks assembly | "Government still collecting clues for delay" | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Srinagar, Oct 4: The issue of Central University of Jammu rocked the state legislature in a big way here today with Jammu based political parties BJP and Panthers party staging a walk out after cornering the state government over the issue of ignoring interests of Jammu region. Soon after the question hour was over the BJP leaders were seen standing on their feet raising the issue of central university of Jammu and non-appointment of the Vice Chancellor. Leader of the BJP legislature party Prof Chaman Lal Gupta sought a statement from the government over the reasons for not establishing the Central University in Jammu. He said, "we want to know the reasons when all other Central Universities are functional what is the reason that the two universities sanctioned for the state of Jammu and Kashmir are no where in the picture". He said while the delay in Kashmir was understandable due to the ongoing unrest, the people of Jammu were being punished for sins committed by others. "What is the sin of the areas where there is no militancy and peace prevails? Instead of benefiting the peaceful areas, you (government) are punishing them for sins of others," Gupta retorted. The BJP leader alleged that the government was ignoring the Jammu region just because Kashmir is not peaceful. Gupta was supported by other members of his party with Ashok Khajuria alleging that a conspiracy was being hatched against Jammu region. Later the BJP members shouted slogans and called for an end to the "discrimination" against the City of Temples. The BJP members then staged a walkout from the House even before the government could respond, prompting Speaker Mohammad Akbar Lone to say that "they only want to create news". State Finance Minister Abdul Rahim Rather said the Central Universities were governed by the Centre itself and he was not authorised to speak on behalf of the Union government. "I will collect the details to give an accurate reply to the queries of the members," he said, adding the MLAs who walked out on the proceedings were not bothered about interests of Jammu but only to create "news". The manner in which the senior minister responded to the issue infuriated members of the Panthers party and later they also staged a walkout as they were not satisfied with the reply. |
