Chib brings Jammu Dental College issues on rails | Recognition of 3 batches real achievement for state government | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, Oct 4: The hue and cry over the plight of Dental College students in Jammu over a host of genuine issues is partly over, though seeking fresh recognition from DCI remains a major task. The political uproar has also calmed down from the opposition parties.Students in particular are heaving a sigh of relief. The political game of one up manship and the manoeuvrings notwithstanding, to take credit for whatever Centre has granted for now, it is the students who are acknowledging that the 'real force' behind putting the matters on 'fast track' is none other than Minister for Higher Medical Education RS Chib whose relentless efforts have borne fruits in time. When the matter related to the Dental College was raised today in the Legislative Council, the Government proudly announced that it has recently appointed recently full time Principal for Indira Gandhi Government Dental College of Jammu and four dental chairs have been put in place. Both these assertions are correct. However, apart from these steps and few more in offing which includes creation of a full fledged faculty in the College besides setting up of Dental College, the real achievements for the statement remains the recognition of three batches , an issue over which the students remained on strike followed by fast unto death for few days. While no authority in the government, not even his predecessors ever took up the issue seriously with the Government of India, RS Chib made persistent efforts in this 'rigorous exercise' till it was brought to some logical and desirable conclusion. "We approached GOI nearly four times in recent past and kept harping on this particular issue in the interests of the students……we did not want their time and career to get affected anymore…….we took up with this matter with the Union Health ministry led by Ghulam Nabi Azad as well", said Minister of Medical Education Chib adding that Azad too was considerate enough to understand the seriousness of the issue and helped reclamation of these batches. Ironically, while the Dental College despite lack of infrastructure and faculty moved on its working, the authorities till date slept over the most significant aspect of the batches of year 2004-05, 2005-06 and 2006-07 not getting recognition and regularisation of their courses. While the creation of infrastructure and arranging faculty with appointment of eligible persons for vacant posts are the steps the state government is now seriously pursuing as it is due to these shortcomings and deficiencies the College has been de recognised. But what was perceived by all as the main hurdle and a daunting task- regularisation and recognition of the three batches remains the main accomplishment in so far as the interests of the students is concerned. Keen to get the recognition from DCI, the government is expediting steps to make over the deficiencies . However, one more measure that has got further boost during the course of these fresh developments is setting up of Dental Hospital in Jammu. "The government has given the contract for its construction which will have expenditure of nearly 20 cr as per initial estimates……the Hospital will come up soon as it is the requirement of the College", said Chib. Meanwhile, the posts of faculty members had been advertised but no eligible candidate has been found available. The government today informed that department will again advertise these posts for engaging them on academic arrangement basis. Dr MR Sharma has been recently appointed as Principal of Indira Gandhi Government Dental College Jammu. |
