Electioneering for LAHDC gains momentum

EARLY TIMES REPORT
LEH, Oct 4: With the ringing of poll bell for the 4th general elections of Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC), the contesting parties and candidates are trying their best to attract the attention of electorates.
With just 11 days are left for the polls, the election rallies and campaigning are gaining momentum with each passing day.
This time around one interesting thing has happened as recently the Ladakh Union Territory Front (LUTF), which was a local political party formed in 90s for pursing the demand of Union Territory status for Ladakh, was merged with BJP and the candidates of LUTF this time are now contesting election as BJP candidates.
One of the senior leaders of LUTF, seeking anonymity, said that the sole purpose of merger with BJP was to raise the voice of Union Territory for Ladakh at national level. Howewver, political observers opined that the merger of LUTF with BJP definitely gives them the status of national party but this may give a setback to their demand of granting union territory status for Ladakh which could prove costly for them in the coming election.
It is for this simple reason that several LUTF members did not join BJP and instead they chose to contest election independently.
Even some of the members shifted their loyalties towards Indian National Congress which is the main opposition party of LUTF in Leh.
A tough competition is expected between Indian Naional Congress and BJP but it is expected that the voters could prefer Congress over its arch rival.
In few constituencies, the congress candidates has already elected unopposed which obviously show their strength but to get a clear majority on their own could be difficult. There are number of independent candidates and their value will definitely be enhanced in case no party gets clear majority.
This time the focus will be on the completion of pending rehabilitation and restructuring works in Leh.
