| J-K Power Dept, consumers at loggerheads over power thefts | | | SRINAGAR, OCT 29 Power Department officials and consumers in Jammu and Kashmir continue to be at loggerheads with each other over the issue of power thefts even after installation of electronic meters that were aimed at preventing pilferage. Electricity thefts had dropped to almost zero initially wherever sophisticated electronic meters were installed but within days displayed an upward trend, sources in the Power Development Department said, accusing consumers of resorting to unfair means to draw power. However, consumers in the state have blamed PDD ground staff for conniving in the thefts and have sought Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad intervention to bring the department under the purview of his anti-corruption drive. "We have been enjoying uninterrupted power supply after the eletronic meters were installed but we are apprehensive that the honeymoon might end soon as there has been largescale pilferage with active support of PDD ground staff," Khursheed Ahmad, a resident of Baghat told PTI. Baghat was one of the first localities here where the PDD had successfully completed installation of meters over a year ago, despite widespread public protests. Ahmad said PDD officials were taking money monthly from almost all residents to allow them to resort to unfair means. Power thefts have been reported from almost all areas where PDP had installed meters but such thefts were minimum compared to large scale misuse of power by consumers, PDD sources said. They said a special squad comprising PDD staff and police personnel would check misuse of power in areas where the eletronic meters have been installed and would speed up the meter installation work in other areas.
