‘It is a political problem and must be solved through political means’ JK is an integral part of India: BJP, PP Geelani is relevant: NC
10/5/2010 11:26:24 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Oct 5: The Kashmir issue echoed in the Legislative Assembly today with all the political parties and independent legislators saying it was a dispute to be settled. The Bhartaya Janata Party (BJP) and Panther's Party (PP), however, reiterated their known stand on Kashmir. "It is an integral part of India", they said. A National Conference leader surprised all by stating Geelani was highly relevant in contemporary Kashmir.
The CPI (M) leader, Muhammad Yusuf Tarigami said: "It (Kashmir) is not a three month old problem. It has roots in the history. "Had our bodies been reddened with blood once, we could think of forgiving the rulers. But, it seems bloodshed, killings and destruction and Kashmiris are inseparable", he said.
In a highly emotional tome Yusuf said whether the bullet came from Islamabad or New Delhi, it was always targeted at Kashmiris. "We heard several warning shots during the past two decades. The shots shook our conscience but we failed to act."
"I cannot give life to those who got killed. Five lakhs or ten lakhs cannot compensate a father who lost his son", he said.
Tarigami urged New Delhi, Jammu Kashmir rulers and the opposition to wake up. "If we do not wake up now and take appropriate measures then I am afraid Kashmir will present the look of war ravaged Afghanistan. There will be ruins all around", he said.
Making a mention of Machil and Pathribal killings, Yusuf said Mahatma Gandhi had Kashmir in mind when he laid the foundation of Indian nation. Why has Kashmir become an eye sore for every one", he questioned.
Taking a dig at BJP members, Tarigami said when punishment is recommended for an erring soldier, they link it with the morale of the security forces. "A soldier who does not follow the code of conduct is a slur on his own organization."
The BJP leader, Chaman Lal Gupta expressed grief over loss of lives in Kashmir. He, however, raised several questions. "How torched BISCO school? What about 5000 soldiers who sustained injuries during the past four months?"
Gupta said Kashmir was an integral part of India and no power on earth could take it away from us. "We have decided to live with India twice. We cannot take a third decision", he said. "We should not discuss Kashmir only. We have to discuss Jammu Kashmir. The people of Jammu have also suffered", he added.
Chaman Lal said Kashmir problem was an outcome of terrorism. "It has to be dealt with strictly", he made clear.
National Conference member from Kupwara, Mir Saifullah said misfortune for Kashmir started in 1947 when India and Pakistan achieved independence. "Kashmir is a dispute. Nobody can deny it. It has been discussed time and again in the UN Security Council", he said.
"Had Kashmir not been a dispute then Lahore, Tashkant and Shimla agreements would not have been signed. If it is not a dispute then Sher-e-Kashmir would not have spent 22 years in jail", he said.
Congress leader, Chowdhury Muhammad Aslam said: "If Kashmir is a political problem then it can be solved through dialogue", he said. "The instrument of accession was signed after due consideration of all the aspects", he added.
Peoples Democratic Forum (PDF) president, Hakim Muhammad Yasin said Kashmir is not a problem of unemployment or underdevelopment. "It is a political problem and must be solved politically.
Yasin while addressing the Chief Minister said Kashmir must not be turned into a laboratory to know how much damage can a rubber bullet or iron bullet cause. New Delhi has been doing experiments in Kashmir since 1947 without results., Today state is ruled by Congress. We have a Congress government at New Delhi. If no measures are taken today then it will be too late", he said.
PP leader, Harsh Dev Singh said not only Jammu Kashmir the entire India is worried. "Kashmir has been, is and shall remain a part of India", he said. Dev expressed grief over loss of lives in Kashmir.
"People talk of repeal of AFSPA and militarization. Let them know they live here only because of the army", he said.
Senior National Conference leader, Chowdhury Ramzan while admitting Kashmir as a political problem said Hurriyat led by Geelani was highly relevant in contemporary Kashmir. "The government of India resorted to tricks in Jammu Kashmir since 1975", he said. BJP leader Ashok Khajuria said had Nehru not taken the issue to United Nations, the situation would have been different today. "There cannot be two constitutions in a country. India must take Pakistan Occupied Kashmir from Pakistan and annex it with rest of the country", he said.
MLA Langat, Engineer Abdul Rashid while giving a brief historic account of the problem said :"If elections in Pakistan administered Kashmir could not make it the jugular vein of Pakistan, how can elections in this Kashmir make it an integral part of India."
"India promised plebiscite but backed out of its promise", he accused.
