JMC conducts drive against adulteration

JAMMU, Oct 6:Under instructions from Commissioner Municipal Corporation Jammu S C Sawhney, the Health Officer of Jammu Municipal Corporation along with team of Food Inspectors inspected various food establishments to check the quality of food items being sold in the city especially during the forthcoming Navratras and Dusshera Festival.
The team inspected various food establishments like Sweet Shops, Milk and Milk Products shops / vendors, Cooked Food Dhabas, Cheese shops, etc., in the areas of Bikram Chowk, Jewel Chowk, Talab Tillo, Bohri, Roop Nagar, Janipur Bahu Fort. During the inspection about 160 food establishments were checked and 49 Nos of defaulters were booked under the provisions of J&K Municipal Corporation Act, 2000 and a fine of Rs 11,100 was charged from the defaulters on spot. In addition to this, the team also destroyed 1 quintal of substandard milk, about 10 kg of stale cooked food and 50 kgs of sweets non fit for human consumption on spot.
Besides this, the Municipal Veterinary Officer along with field staff conducted a drive against the adulteration of milk in the areas of Gandhi Nagar, Nai Basti, Satwari, Jewan Nagar, Digiana etc and 78 milk cans were lifted out which 12 milk cans were sent to the laboratory to check the quality of the milk. The team also destroyed 2 milk cans of sub-standard quality and a fine of Rs 2400 was also realized from the erring Milk Vendors on spot.
Further continuing the drive to check the menace of stray animals, the team visited the areas of Panjthirthi, New Plot, Janipur, Akhnoor Road, Talab Tillo, Chowk Chabutra, Narwal, Railway Road, Channi and lifted 27 stray animals from these areas. The stray animals were impounded in the Municipal Cattle Pound. An amount of Rs 3490 was also realized from the owners of stray animals.
To clear the encroachments, Enforcement Staff led by Ravi Sharma, Chief Enforcement Officer, continued the drive to clear the footpaths / pavements from goods / articles placed by shopkeepers thereby causing inconvenience to the pedestrians and also obstructing the free flow of vehicular traffic, in the areas of Bikram Chowk, Gandhi Nagar and Shastri Nagar. During the drive material / goods like Umbrellas, Weighing Scales, Crates, Counters, benches tandoors, Utensils, Photo Frames etc, which were placed upon footpaths / pavements by the shopkeepers / vendors in these areas, were seized.
