Musharraf keen to regain power in Pakistan
10/6/2010 8:58:06 PM
Though the decision of former Pakistani military ruler,Parvz Musharraf, to form a political party for contesting the 2013 election has caused sleepless nights to the PPP led Government in Islamabad it has not set major rivers in Pakistan on fire. The reason being that despite the fact that Parvez Musharraf ruled Pakistan, without any major hicuups for about nine years he had not been able to establish a constituency in Pakistan.Yes,he has pockets of influence in the entire country but that may not help him in winning the battle of ballot against his political foes.In fact since his self-imposed hibernation in London from 200i8,when he lost power, he has been toying with the idea of forming a political party which could help him in staging a comeback.Notwithstanding his two-year long sojourn in London Musharraf is believed to have remained in constant touch with the day to day developments in Pakistan. As a shrewd politician he has remained in constant contact with inservice and retired bureaucrats and Army officers who had been benefitted during his rule. Not only this a major chunk of big traders have remained loyal to him and they too have been feeding him with day to day political and security related developments in Pakistan.Reports indicate that after Musharraf was convined that Pakistan was faced with a grave political and economic crisis he announced formation of All Pakstan Muslim League. The purpose was to convey to people of Pakistan, his friends and even his foes that he was staging a comeback. No doubt the announcement was greeted with protests in London by not well known terroist group it seems that Musharraf may return to Pakistan once he found the climate conducive for his resurfacing.Already the devastating floods, affecting 20 million people in Pakistan, danger of financial collapse and political crisis seem to motivate Musharraf for preparing himself for contesting the next election to the National Assembly.Indications are that those political leaders, religious extremists and fundamentalists, besides those connected with legal and academic professions, who have felt dismayed and disheartned by the functioning of the PPP led Government may ultimately encourage Musharraf to return to Pakistan as early as possible.Well, the issue relating to the fate and future of Musharraf depends on the policy of Washington. No doubt during the last over two years the Government led by Asif Ali Zardari has been succesful in promoting cordial tis with Washington but there are issues which have started causing strains in the relations. Musharraf, during the time he held power in Pakistan, had gone against the wishes of majority of Pakistanis when he agreed to provide bases to the American troops for setting up camps for carrying out operations against the terrorist in Afghanistan. People were not for Musharraf agreeing to cooperate with Washington in its anti-terrorist operations. He did it for preventing Pakistan from facing financial and security collapse. And by and by even the critics of Musharraf started supporting his pro-US policies. And this time also the US Government has been playing a vital role in providing liberal financial assistance to Islamabad for meeting the cost on rescue, relief and rehabilitation of flood victims.Again it is the US that continues to provide massive military and non-military aid to Pakistan.Well if Musharraf regains power it may not cause much discomfiture to Delhi,if the does so after winning the election, because he has not adopted as stiff anti-India postures as his predecessors had adopted. Political analysts in India and Pakistan have stated that had Musharraf remained in power he would have been instrumental in settling the Kashmir issue because his four-point proposal on Kashmir was a major deviation from the known stand of Islamabad which favours Kashmir's merger with Pakistan.
