Kashmir violence mars tourism season; Jammu, Kashmir regions both suffering | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Oct 6: Hoteliers, houseboat owners, transporters, traders and all others who are somehow connected with tourism in both Jammu and Kashmir are extremely worried due to poor inflow of tourists to the valley. Officials maintain that with the advent of October, valley used to receive the autumn tourist traffic. They said so far the trends are disappointing when compared to the earlier years. They said that the valley has been registering two tourist seasons i.e. between April and end of June and the other between October and beginning of January. They said most of the tourists who visit valley from December onwards usually take part in winter sports. Officials and those running various travel agencies in Srinagar and Delhi said that whether for the autumn season or for the winter sports, tourists would start booking reservations from October itself but so far there has been not more than five per cent demand for reservation of rooms when compared to the last year. In reply to a question they said that the level of violence and turmoil that valley has seen during the last about four months has kept tourists away from Kashmir. They said that heavy rush of visitors to the valley would usually benefit hoteliers, transporters and traders in Jammu also because those who would come by road used to spend a day or two in Jammu. A number of traders, transporters and hoteliers in Jammu said that they are dependent on pilgrim rush to Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine and the two-month long Amarnath yatra since the rise of militancy in Kashmir in 1990. They said that since 1996, situation had eased. They said the ongoing turmoil in the valley has kept tourists away from the state and it may result in a loss of over Rs.1500 crores to transporters, traders, hoteliers and houseboat owners in the state. A number of people connected with tourism sector said that the situation may ease in the near future. They have appealed separatists to stop giving calls for hartals and protest rallies which trigger violence. They have demanded compensation to the hoteliers, houseboat owners and others for the losses they suffered because of slump in tourist traffic to Jammu and Kashmir. |
