BJP's double-speak: Sushma hailing 8-point package, J-K BJP opposing it | STARK REALITY | | RUSTAM EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Oct 6: On September 30, J&K unit of the BJP organized bandh in Jammu to register what it called its "opposition to the New Delhi's just-announced 8-point package." The bandh was a massive affair. Jammu observed a complete shutdown and sent a clear signal that they rejected outrightly the New Delhi's 8-point package as another move on the part of the authorities in the Union Capital to pander to communalism, separatism and terrorism in Kashmir. There was consensus in Jammu that the said package was rabidly anti-Jammu, anti-Ladakh and anti-refugees. The bandh was complete not because the people of Jammu obeyed the BJP's call. It was complete and massive because they extremely became angry with New Delhi and the Kashmir-centric and pro-separatist state government, headed by the NC, the root cause of all troubles in the state. The decision of the J&K unit of the BJP to organize bandh in Jammu was yet another cunning move on its part to hoodwink, mislead and blackmail the people of Jammu province. It knew that the people of the Jammu province were angry and it exploited to the hilt that sentiment to take a political mileage out of the their frustration, desperation and anger. Otherwise, there was no reason for the BJP to organize a shutdown - shutdown supported by one and all; even those (read transporters' organization) who had a day earlier declared that they would not support the bandh call had to go into hibernation on the day of bandh taking into account the Jammu sentiment. Such was the nature of the Jammu's anger. The BJP-watchers felt aghast when they learned that the outfit had given a call for Jammu bandh. The reason: The Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha Sushma Swaraj and Arun Jaitley (senior BJP leaders) were party to the 8-point package. They were part of the all-party parliamentary delegation that visited J&K in the third week of September for an on-the-spot-assessment of the situation. It was in consultation with them that the Union Home Minister had formulated the separatist and militant-friendly 8-point package. The J&K unit of the BJP knew it, but still it enacted an act of political debauchery and gave call for Jammu bandh. In the evening, the president of the state BJP held a press conference and thanked the people for their support. It was a shameful act. It was nothing but a naked manifestation of the BJP's belief in double-speak; belief in the politics of opportunism; and belief in unscrupulousness. The BJP president mistook the people's support to the bandh call as support to the BJP, which has all along betrayed the people of Jammu and similar other people in the state and promoted the cause of Kashmir. Take, for example, the BJP support to the 2002 amendment that banned delimitation of the assembly constituencies till 2036. That the BJP is indulging in double-speak and hitting the people of Jammu province below the belt or betraying them and outraging their sensitivities could be seen from what the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj said in Vadodara (Gujarat) on Tuesday regarding the 8-point package. She said: "She welcomes the Centre's 8-point initiative on Kashmir; it has created a positive impact." There was no reference whatsoever to the miserable plight of Jammu and Ladakh as well as refugees, who have been moving heaven and earth since decades to obtain justice and achieve their civil and political rights, including the right to live, right to return to their original habitat, right to vote, right to property and right to education. Her whole formulation was Kashmir-centric. And, it was expected of her. After all, a few weeks earlier, she had arranged a meeting between the Union Home Minister and over 50 Kashmiri separatists in New Delhi so that the latter could discuss their demands, including the demand of independence, with the former. This is the political behaviour of the so-called nationalist and pro-Jammu, pro-Ladakh and pro-refugee BJP. It beguiles and misleads them by opposing the actions of the Union Government and outside Jammu, it takes an altogether a different stand. In Jammu, it identifies itself with its sentiment and other nationalists in the state and outside Jammu, it makes common cause with the Congress-led UPA Government and endorses all of its actions designed to appease the separatists in Kashmir. Who of the two - J&K BJP and Sushma - is speaking the language of the party high command? If it is Sushma Sawraj, then disciplinary action needs to be taken against the state unit of the BJP, which organized bandh on the issue of 8-point package, and if it is the state unit of the BJP that is toeing the line of the party high command, then action should be taken against Sushma, who has given her unstinted support to the 8-point package. The BJP just cannot take the people of Jammu for a ride. The BJP should take a clear-cut stand on the issue and not indulge in double-speak. One thing is clear: The BJP is in for a serious trouble both in the state and in the rest of the country. Parties like BJP need to be de-recognized because they play with the sentiments of the people for votes and ditch them after garnering votes. |
