EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Oct 6: Even as the scholars and students of Jammu University raised a voice of protest against the alleged discrepancies in recent lists of selected candidates for interviews of Kashmir Administrative Services (KAS), some student leaders with their 'dubious' role tried to dissuade the protesters from taking part in the demonstration held on campus here today.
The protesting research scholars and students, who held a symbolic demonstration and boycotted their classes, besides lamenting the alleged favouritism and biased results of KAS mains declared recently by Jammu Kashmir Public Service Commission (JKPSC), were also objecting the violation of the university norms in recent appointments by the administration.
The students of department of Law, Mathematics, Zoology, Geography, Botany and Language blocks boycotted the classes.
These students and scholars along with hundreds of candidates, who had appeared in KAS (Mains) examinations, also took out a protest march on campus and staged demonstration alleging "deep-rooted conspiracy" to decrease the strength of Jammu aspirants.
Normal class work in all departments of the varsity virtually disrupted with protestors raising slogans against the state Public Service Commission.
The KAS (Mains) candidates including female aspirants, who did not qualify the examinations, assembled near Central Library of University and took out a protest march.
Chanting slogans against the state government and the Commission, the protestors tried to block traffic movement on roads outside University main gate that led to minor scuffle with the police personnel.
It was not only blockade of police which stopped the agitated students' protest march towards road, some University student leaders representing Congress and National Conference surprisingly also reached there and persuaded the aggrieved students to call off their agitation and promised the latter that they would take up the issue before their respective parties' high command.
Though these leaders to discourage the protestors from raising their voice against JKPSC but barring few most of the students did not relent and continued to raise anti-Commission slogans.
"All these students having affiliation with the Congress and NC maneuvered hard to misguide the KAS candidates as they don't want that the government should be made accountable for the disparity with Ladakh and Jammu based candidates," said a KAS aspirant wishing anonymity.
Suresh Ajay Magotra, a scholar from Department of Chemistry demanded from JKPSC to disclose the category wise cut off marks and identity of selected candidates who have qualified for the interview.
"We smell fraud in the list as names and parentage of the candidates was not disclosed. This year the commission had only published roll numbers of the selected candidates," he maintained.
Another scholar from Department of Dogri, Sunil Sharma said, "The Commission has committed gross irregularities and favouritism during the recent results of the KAS (Mains). We will intensify our agitation if the list published by the commission is not revoked or withdrawn."
Later, the protestors dispersed peacefully with a unanimous resolution that the struggle would be further intensified.
Meanwhile, in a meeting of Jammu Joint Students' Federation (JJSF), its state president Pushvinder Singh Manhas said that biasness in KAS mains list is another glaring example of discrimination with the people of Jammu.
It is shameful moment for Jammu's MLAs and leaders representing aspirations of lakhs of Jammuites adding that this silent attitude of public representatives and politicians shows their lack of will to fight Jammu's cause.
He said that now the time has come when the Jammu students have left with no other option to come out on streets and oppose such disparities.
Manhas appealed to the general public of Jammu region to stop bearing this discrimination and join together on a common platform to raise the voice of dissent.
