Omar, Dr Farooq differ on accession
10/6/2010 11:21:42 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
Jammu, Oct 6: The Chief Minister and his father, Dr Farooq Abdullah seem to pursue different goals. Dr Farooq does not question the totality of state's accession to Indian union. Omar on the contrary believes the accession is not total. "It is conditional and temporary", he said today while addressing the Legislative Assembly.
The former Chief Minister, Dr Farooq Abdullah has always tried to be more Indian than the Indians. During his regime, he behaved more as the External Affairs Minister of India than the Chief Minister of Jammu Kashmir. Time and again he threatened Pakistan of dire consequences for "causing trouble in Kashmir." He even suggested military action against Islamabad for encouraging terrorism in Kashmir. Fortunately his overtures were not taken seriously by New Delhi and a third war between the two neighbours was prevented.
Farooq believes in totality of accession. "We have taken a decision. Kashmir is an integral part of India and no power on earth can take it away from India", he often says.
The senior Abdullah must have received the shock of his life today after listening to his son. Omar not only rejected totality of accession but went to the extent of saying that Jammu Kashmir cannot be compared to Junagarh and Hyderbad "because Jammu Kashmir has not merged into India. This means Kashmir is a dispute to be settled."
Taking a dig at the Bhartaya Janata Party (BJP) members, Omar said: "They keep on saying that Kashmir is an integral part of India. They never say Tamil Nadu or Mizoram are integral parts of India. By issuing such statements they have been giving an impression that Kashmiris were not trustworthy."
He said the accession took place in `special circumstances' and, therefore, needs a `special solution'. "This has been admitted by the union Home Minister as well", he said.
Interestingly the separatist camp has a similar stand on the issue. They also seek a political solution and all of them also reject totality of accession. A question arises. If Omar and separatists pursue a similar goal why are they jailed?
