Geelani, infiltration worrisome developments for J&K govt | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Oct 7: State and the central Government are said to be worried over two developments in the Kashmir valley which have the potential of further destabilizing peace. Official sources indicated that worry is over the way Syed Ali Shah Geelani's writ continues to run in Kashmir when the Government's attempt at promoting peace continues to show no results despite sincere efforts being made by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. Another worry is the way militants, operating within the state have not only started resurfacing but also engaging security forces in direct encounters. Also, government is perturbed over manner in which infiltration bids have increased during the last three months. Official sources said that even on days when the government does not impose curfew restrictions, normal life in Kashmir stands paralyzed because of the call for shutdown given by Geelani. They refer to Wednesday's incident when life remained paralyzed even when there were no curfew restrictions. It was because of the call for shutdown given by Geelani. They said despite peace initiatives and the commitment made by the centre that all issues would be discussed and debated before they are resolved seems to have fallen on deaf ears. According to these sources, despite the decision of the government to remove 16 CRPF bunkers in Srinagar city, security forces and the troops have been directed to intensify counter-infiltration and anti-insurgency operations not only in the Kashmir valley but in the sensitive areas of the Jammu region. The Government has received reports that militants were trying to lure youths in the districts of Doda, Kishtwar, Poonch, Rajouri and parts of the Udhampur district to join their groups for increasing number of incidents of violence. Sources said that due to intense patrolling, troops have so far foiled more tan 45 infiltration bids from across the LOC and the IB during the last over four months. But inputs from intelligence agencies have revealed that scores of militants equipped with sophisticated weapons have sneaked into Jammu and Kashmir during the last six months. As a result of anti-insurgency operations, about a dozen self-styled commanders of various militants outfits, including the Hizbul Mujahideen and the Lashkar-i-Toiba,had been arrested and some of them having been eliminated in encounters. Reports said that since reports have gone round in Kashmir that large groups of militants had crossed into Jammu and Kashmir and were getting ready to strike, people in the valley dared not to defy calls for shutdown and protest rallies being given by Geelani. However, official sources said that when more peace packages are announced and the group of interlocutors complete their first session with the separatists, the situation was likely to improve.
