Record participation in inter-college wrestling | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, October 07: The annual inter-college wrestling competition has attracted a record number of over 100 young wrestlers from different parts of Jammu Province in the two-day meet underway at Gymnasium Hall of University of Jammu, here today. The gold win by Susheel Kumar in the World Championship has undoubtedly played a great role in attracting the youth towards the indigenous game of wrestling in this part of the country. “As against near 50 participants last year, over 100 entries this time certainly has some relation with Indian wrestlers triumph at the international level. This is how sports grow, when one big achievement encourages thousands,” chairman of the technical committee and veteran wrestler, Mukh Raj told SAN on the sidelines of the inter-college competition. Once treated a rural game, wrestling has earned a new name with boys from good family back grounds taking up the sports in a big way. “We were being treated as second class citizens in sports erana, but the big win by Susheel and now the medals haul in the ongoing Commonwealth Games by wrestler has changed the mind set of the general masses,” said one of the participants in the inter-college meet, Ajay in a chat with SAN. Meanwhile, the organizing committee had tough time to handle such a big number of competitors. Since weighing consumed a lot of time, the actual competition started only in the afternoon. The opening day witnessed conduct of preliminary round of competitions in four different weight categories. In all, 16 affiliated colleges of University of Jammu have fielded their wrestlers in this two-day meet which was declared open by Head of the Department of Statistics, JU, Prof JP Singh. He was accompanied by Director Sports and Physical Education, Prof Dhian Singh Bhau. Today’s bouts were officiated by Jai Bharat, Mulkh Raj Sharma, Ravinder Sharma, Kulbir Singh, Sandeep Sharma and Chander Bushan Sharma.
