BSNL reviving communication facilities in Leh

LEH, Oct 7: Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) is yet to revive communication facilities completely across Leh after the flash floods wreaked havoc in the month of August.
The flood water completely washed away the main station and administration block of BSNL in Leh city alongside damaging several sub-stations and other outdoor networks in rural areas. The impact was so deep that the means of telecommunication in Leh and surrounding areas got completely disturbed for many days.
Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited Leh is not only providing Mobile and telephone service but also providing broadband, dial up and v-sat internet service. Apart from general public, BSNL is also catering army in Leh. Although the Army is not solely dependent on BSNL yet in normal times, most of the services to it are provided by BSNL.
“BSNL Leh has suffered a hug lost which is to the tune of nearly Rs. 25 Crore," said the telecom District Manager Leh Mahesh Singh Nikhurpa, ITS. He further said that main control station at Leh, two engines at Choglamsar, one engine at Saboo village have got completely washed away and at many places, outdoor network system has also suffered serious damage. Mobile BTS was also damaged at Skurbuchan.
"We immediately airlifted the essential equipments from Chandigarh which include thirty-eight digital satellite telephone twenty-five V-sats and others components, for the restoration of service in Leh,” said he Telecom District Manager Leh.
Immediately after the flood, department issued 250 WLL sets to government and other important organizations. Apart from this, department also issued many V-Sat for internet users.
There are many limitations in quickly restoring the service in Leh district. Bad road connectivity, poor electricity, tough terrain and weather condition make it difficult to restore the service, said the telecom manager. Shortage of manpower especially expertise person and the officers having short tenure make the situation more worsen. 
He further said the department has already restored mobile and telephone service in all rural areas except in Choglamsar, Saboo and Igoo village where impact was so strong that the outdoor network was completely lost. Manager was quite confident to restore all the pending services by the end of this month.
The telephone numbers with digits 250 and 254 would be changed while the rest will retain their previous number. In the next ten days, all the subscribers in the city will get services properly, said the district Manager. On the question of service quality, District Manager said that they have 1 lakh customer capacity service which is being upgraded to two lakh.
Apart form the currently providing mobile and telephone service, BSNL is also providing Lease line service to Airlines, Banks, Air force and to others organizations. District Manager also referred to limitations like frequently damage of fibre cable between Kashmir and Ladakh and not having proper transferring methods of higher authorities. Overall the BSNL department is doing a good job in providing good and quality service in Leh.
