Let’s Learn From Our Mistakes In Kashmir
King C Bharati10/7/2010 9:27:44 PM
Kashmir has been the seat of highest learning since time immemorial. As we know it, great saints and sages were the inhabitants of this place even when it was supposedly a big lake called Satisar and the greatest sage of those times Kashyap Rishi is said to have thrown out a big monster from Satisar not by violence but because of his knowledge and
wisdom. Kashmir, named after that great sage has since then been the seat of higher education, research and great scholars, where people
from around the Indian subcontinent used to come to get the final opinion in the matters of higher learning and religious affairs.
It was here that first written history of Kashmir Raj Tarangni was given to the people by the great scholar Kalhana and it was here many
centuries later that Revered Lal Ded, Nund Rishi and many sufi saints carried the legacy of highest learning, peace and brotherhood forward.
However the place of pride that Kashmir had due to its beauty, peace, tranquility, secularism and education has taken a back seat over the
past two decades of sponsored violence by a handful of vested interests who claim to be the champions of Kashmiri cause but in reality have brought this beautiful land to the brink of an irrevocable disaster.
While the world famous tourism, beauty and secularism had already been eroded in Kashmir the recent developments have taken a toll that pains every sane person in the world.
The sponsors of terror in Kashmir have demonstrated amply that their only concern was to turn Kashmir into another Afghanistan irrespective
of the fact whether it ruins the future of the generation next in terms of their loss in education thus making them incapable to face the fast
changing world outside Kashmir.
The image of Kashmiri youth has already been tarnished around the globe making them nothing more than stone throwers while the attacks on the
school buses and burning of public property has added yet another blot on the face of Kashmir which will be very hard to erase because it is the opinion of international law makers and intellectuals that matters a lot these days instead of what Hardliners would like us to believe that keeping school children far away from schools and books was the best solution to the vexed Kashmir imbroglio.
The super success of Dr Shah Faesal in Civil Services exams had turned a new leaf in the trouble torn Kashmir Valley before the eyes of the intellectuals all over the world but continued shutdowns and the
closure of schools and educational institutions in particular has shaken the conscience of the every right thinking person not only in India but also in neighboring Pakistan where voices have already been
raised against continued closure of schools and other educational institutions.
It is time the common man raises his voice this time for their own cause to denounce the forced closure of schools and educational institutions whether by the Hurriyat Bandh calls or the Govt enforced curfews because our next generation must not suffer for the failures of Omar Abdullah and Sayed Ali Shah Geelani.
Our next generation will never forgive us and would ask their parents why they behaved like New Delhi when they could have chosen not to, because while New Delhi is going all out to save the rejected and
failed Omar Abdullah for God knows why; Kashmiri’s have also been sacrificing not only the lives of their children but also their future
to save the obstinate Geelani for God knows why.
While Kashmiri’s might have a reason, on the other side of the tunnel a new breed of hardliners has emerged in Jammu who have been sacrificing
the future of their children to satisfy their egos by denying the local students a chance to study in a national level university like Jammu Central University over the fanatic assumption that only a Jammuite must occupy the hot seat of Vice Chancellor of Jammu Central University even if that means losing the Central University altogether.
Even though this writer was among the first to raise the voice that a local should head the university but that does not mean to sacrifice the precious year of our children knowing the fact that powerful New
Delhi was adamant in not letting the regionalism interfere in running the institutions of highest learning.
One wonders what the so called champions of Jammu want to achieve by neither letting the Union Government appoint a Vice Chancellor for the
Central University nor being able to force it to change its decision in favour of a local Vice Chancellor. The fear that worries the common man
is that New Delhi would grab this opportunity to snatch the precious Central University from Jammu and deny the students of this region of a world class institution of learning.
They fail to appreciate the fact that a big decision needs bigger determination and in between it is our next generation that becomes the ultimate looser however at times it seems that they simply know the fact but don’t care for the future of our children to keep their pot of politics boiling.Had it not been so Jammuites would not have been left to lurch after
the government broke the agreement reached during Amarnath agitation with impunity while on the one hand the entire political class
including those form Jammu spend mid night oil to get huge political as well as economic package for those who threw stones on security forces, raise anti-India slogans, destroy national property and indulge in
communal violence and on the other the victims of Jammu agitation are still waiting for justice because their leaders lack determination and unity of purpose.
It will be in the fitness of things for the people of both the regions to shun these fanatics and selfish leaders to save the future of our children lest the students of Jammu and Kashmir are looked down upon by
the world as protestors and stone throwers.
At another side in Mendhar area of Poonch district yet another breed of neo Geelanis’ have taken it upon themselves to bring the miseries of Kashmiri people to their area by destroying public property and
peaceful atmosphere by continuing to blame the J&K government for an act of sacrilege that actually happened thousands of miles away, but there too economic packages have been formulated by the government while here in Jammu government and the so called leaders and ministers of Jammu join hands to destroy their own people by slapping stringent
laws on them to keep their masters in good humour for petty politics.
There are many people who actually desire Jammu to achieve its place of pride but our own selfish politicians and ministers are harming our
cause while in Kashmir thousands of Kashmiri youth are sacrificed for
the egos of a few who call the shots.
The politics of appeasement has such a following in J&K that even our chief minister has joined the bandwagon of the likes of JKLF calling
the merger of J&K with India as an agreement and not merger.
This apparently is being done to woo the Independence seekers to weaken Geelani but the fact is that it is the people of J&K who are paying a heavy price for the follies of our politicians.
Kashmiris have already sacrificed the future of their children by joining the continued Hartals and keeping their children off the educational institutions and now the vested interests in Jammu have deprived their children of a world class institution in the shape of
Central University.
If our leaders really mean business why don’t they force the GOI to change its decision on appointment of VC in CUJ and if they can’t why interfere and waste a big opportunity for our children which does not come easily to Jammuites.
Let’s learn from Kashmir experience and do not let our children suffer for our lapses whether in Kashmir or in Jammu. Let’s wake up and save atleast the future of our own kids and this time sacrifice our leaders instead of letting them to sacrifice us.
