10/7/2010 11:34:47 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
SRINAGAR, Oct 7: At least three students were today injured as protesters pelted stones at school buses at two places in Kashmir, where the separatist-sponsored strike disrupted life with shops and business establishments in the main markets closed and public transport off the roads.
A group of youths pelted stones at a State Road Transport Corporation (SRTC) bus, carrying students of a private school, at Zindshah Masjid in Rainawari locality of downtown Srinagar this afternoon, a police spokesman said.
He said three students were injured and the vehicle was damaged in the incident.
Another group of youths damaged a school bus at Nowshera locality of Soura on the outskirts of the city. However, none was hurt in the incident, he said.
Educational institutions reopened in Srinagar and other major towns of the Valley on September 27 but attendance of the students has been fluctuating with most of them preferring to stay at home during the strike days in response to the protest calendar of hardline faction of Hurriyat Conference headed by Syed Ali Shah Geelani.
The spokesman said some youths also tried to block the Srinagar-Baramulla National highway near Tengpora bypass in Batamaloo area of central Srinagar.
However, security forces acted swiftly and chased away the miscreants, he said, adding, none were hurt in the brief clashes.
He said some miscreants also tried to set on fire a public vehicle in Anantnag district town of South Kashmir last night but their attempt was thwarted by police.
Barring these incidents, the situation in the Valley remained by and large peaceful, the spokesman said.
As Hurriyat asked people to observe a complete strike today, the main markets wore a deserted look with most of the shops closed and public transport remaining off the roads. However, private transport plied on all routes.
