RTI activists called on Sushama Swaraj | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Oct 8: A deputation of Right to Information (RTI) activists of the State called on senior BJP leader and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Sushama Swaraj in N Delhi last evening to discuss the selection process for the Central Information Commission. They also discussed draft of Whistleblower Bill. RTI activists discussed with Sushama Swarah the need for a well-defined, transparent and democratic process to identify best candidates for the Central and State-level information commissions. During the meeting, the delegation described how the opaque selection processes had led to the selection of weak and ineffective information commissions in several states. The activists included Dr. Preetaish Kaul and Satyarth Pandit of the J&K RTI Movement and P.M. Bhat from Mysore. The activists presented JKRTIM Convener Dr. Muzaffar Bhat's recommendations to the Selection Committees for the Central Information Commission and the J&K State Information Commission. During the discussion, Dr. Kaul highlighted the recommendations made at a national RTI activist meeting on 4 August at the Indian Institute of Public Administration. Key recommendations included the soliciting of non-bureaucratic nominations from the public; the holding of a public hearing so that citizens can voice their expectations of the commissioners, the release of a shortlist of candidates; the disclosure of a well-defined timeframe for making the appointments; The delegation included Dr Shah Faisal, Raman Sharma, Haw Nawaz Nehru, Ayaz Mughal, Balvinder Singh, Shaikh Ghulam Rasool, Sultan Shahnawaz and Satyarth Pandit. |
