Wildlife week observed

JAMMU, Oct 8: The Department of Wildlife Protection J&K Government observed wildlife week from October 2 to 8 coinciding with the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. The department conducted week- long awareness programme spreading all over the state to create awareness among the people particularly the youth for conservation of wildlife and their habitat.
The programme included publication of messages of VVIPs about wildlife conservation in the leading dailies , interviews of senior officers through print and electronic media, debate and painting competition, cultural prog-ramme and organised visits of children to National Park and Wildlife Sanctuaries.
The state level valedictory function for observance of wildlife week was held today at Nature Interpretation Centre Building, Manda Hills, Jammu.
Minister of Forests Mian Altaf Ahmed was the chief guest.. P.P. Sharma, retired Pr. Chief Conservator of Forests/Chief Wildlife Warden, S.D.Swatantra, retired Pr. Chief Conservator of Forests/Chief Wildlife Warden Abdul Qayoom Khan S, MD SFC P.C. Kapoor Chief Wildlife Warden, S.C. Sharma Chief Conservator of Forests Jammu and Deepak Khana, Chief Conservator of Forests (Eco-Tourism/Wildlife), senior Foresters/ Wildlife officers, faculty members of the Jammu University/SKUAST, NGOs, teachers and students of various schools, conservationists, experts, representatives of various departments attended the function. Schoolchildren presented a variety of cultural items regarding conservation of wildlife.
Sh. P.C. Kapoor ,Chief Wildlife Warden in his welcome address highlighted the importance of conservation of wildlife and their habitat and appealed to the people particularly youth to make the state green and safe haven for rich biodiversity of the state.
Ashok Sharma, ex-MLC, convener ICELA, Jammu highlighted the protection of forests in the benefit of mankind.
Dr S.P.S. Dutta, retired HOD, environmental sciences, Jammu University also spoke on the occasion .
Minister for Forests environment and wildlife Mian Altaf Ahmed , who was the chief guest on the occasion, gave a brief account about conservation and importance of wildlife and preservation of biodiversity.
The chief guest gave away the prizes to the winners. Earlier, a painting competition was organised among the various schools. The theme of competition was conservation of wildlife. Upender Pachnanda, IFS, Conservator of Forests (Wildlife) Jammu presented the vote of thanks. Tahir Shawl Wildlife Warden Jammu conducted the function.
