Over 500 ultras ready to infiltrate: Lt Gen Rai | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Bhaderwah (doda),oct 8: 16 corps GOC, Lt Gen Rameshwar Rai Friday said that over 500 militants were ready to infiltrate into the state from Pirpanjal range from across the border. "Nearly 450 to 500 militants are sitting across the border on Pak side of the Pirpanjal range to infiltrate into J&K," he said in a chat with media on the sidelines of a function organized here to bridge the gap between security forces and locals. "It is difficult to assess the exact number because we don't get any reports regarding who (militants) are active and who are not but those who were active two to three years back, amongst those only one fourth are left, which means 20 to 25 percent are still there," he added. Commenting on chief minister Omar Abdullah's speech in the state assembly earlier this week that he was against the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) and not army, Lt Gen Rai said, "As you know what the situation was in Jammu and Kashmir earlier and what it is today. The improvement is only because of the presence of the army here." "Army is here only because of AFSPA because Jammu and Kashmir was declared disturbed area. So it's important that unless the situation becomes completely normal, army and AFSPA have to remain together," he added. |
