Bomb disposal operation carried under headlights of vehicles | | | KUNAL SHRIVATSA EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Oct 8: Even though the recovery of suspected 'bomb' in Indira Chowk gripped the entire city with panic on the first day of holy Navratras, the 'inept and callous' attitude of the administration in dealing with the situation has exposed its claims that it is ever ready to quickly respond in such a time of crisis. The way the whole 'bomb' scare was handled has indeed put a question mark on the efficiency of the authorities. The picture taken by Early Times cameraman is self explanatory and speaks volumes of the administration's complete mismanagement in reacting to the situation arisen out of after the appearance of suspected 'explosive'. It is clearly visible in the photograph that the Bomb Disposal Squad of Jammu Kashmir Police, which is expected to handle such situations in a highly professional manner while remaining equipped with the mandatory gadgetries, could be seen diffusing the suspicious object with the help of headlights of police vehicles besides little aid from the glow emanating from photo journalists' flash lights. Ironically, with no lights in halogen lamps on the poles throughout the entire operation, the police had to resort to a makeshift arrangement to brighten the area so that it could extract exactly what was really kept in the six Fruit boxes seized from the spot. Surprising indeed, particularly in the wake of the fact that the stretch is few meters away from MLA Hostel and Civil Secretariat where offices will open next month when Durbar arrives here. |
